Remedies for Back/Neck Pain?

My DH has been suffering from a combination of lower/upper back and neck pain for about the past six months or so. He has been going to a chiropractor about every week/two weeks who would crack his back and then prescribe a 1/2 hour massage each time. This combination has kept his pain at a minimum but he hasn't been to the doctor for the past month so the pain is coming back again. Does he have to keep getting his back cracked? I'm worried about the long-term implications of the cracking - is this safe? Are there are any other remedies available for pain like this?

Thanks for your reply. How did you receive this diagnosis? Were you going to a chiropractor?

Re: Remedies for Back/Neck Pain?

chiropractic wellness is like going to the dentist every six months,

depending on the physical stresses on his spine he may need adjustments any where from once a week to once a month....

i personally go weekly for my adjustment and love it,

if i miss i week i feel the tightness coming and then i make sure i go before the pain comes back

Re: Remedies for Back/Neck Pain?

Your DH needs to see an Orthopedist. He needs a diagnosis before any treatment can take place. My Dad had a fractured vertebrae and didn't even know it. If a Chiropractor were cracking his back, isn't it possible that would have made it worse? This is why seeing a doctor is so important.

If you need a good back specialist, go see Dr. Marc Agulnick in Garden City. He's with Winthrop Orthopaedic Associates.

I hope he feels better! I know how bad back pain is.

Has he been to an ortopedist? If not, that should be his first stop.

A chiropractor is NOT an MD. There is an ENORMOUS difference between a chiro and an orthopedist.

I suffer from serious back problems (have broken my back twice) and chronic back pain. I think chiropractors can be miracle workers, but they are NOT ever a replacement for a good orthopedist.

you wrote see a "doctor" so i replied that a chiropractor is a "doctor"
MD, DO, DC are all "doctors" that specialize in treating the neck and back

*I* wrote no such thing. And I think it's pretty obvious that the poster who DID write that meant a medical doctor, not anyone with a doctoral degree. Chat Icon

Again, chiropractors and MDs are not the same. Their training, in fact, is very, VERY different. As someone with too much experience with back issues, I wouldn't recommend that anyone go to a chiro without going to an orthopedist first. I think chiros are great, but an orthopedist is a MUST for ongoing back and neck pain.
