Sign of the Times (economy)

So I moved to Texas….. cost of living is cheaper. San Antonio is one of the very last cities to be hit by the recession and one of the only cities where the housing market is actually going UP and home values are increasing.

All that being said, it’s still rough.

At my office, nearly half of us have had our electricity shut off or threatened to be shut off at least once (if not more) in the past three months. I’ve only been here three months so I can’t go any further back.

The overall impression is that if you haven’t been late on your payments or had a utility turned off then you should be not just grateful but keep yer danged mouth shut. I have had nothing turned off (yet) nor do I see myself being late on any of my bills (yet) that matter. I do however, have a few medical bills I can not get to. You can’t repossess my health but you can make my life hell. Still I have learned to just go with the flow here.

Its sad that the ‘flow’ isn’t just “Aw sorry to hear that” when someone loses their light, but instead its almost like a happy thing. “Oh lost your power?..haha! How long did you get away without paying? 2months, awesome, I got 75days!”

Conversations over the water cooler are more about how colorful cut-off notices are, green for cable, pink for light, blue for water. What a world we live in.

We’ve had no raises this year, I got none last year and I started in 2007. Next year isn’t looking good for raises either. The overall opinion so from corporate (ironically in NYC) is “be grateful you have a job”. Every one here is indeed grateful, but it doesn’t make anything easier.

I really wish I could see the light at the end of this tunnel.

I hear you- it's ugly out there...

I've been pretty lucky- knock on wood- but I know fortunes can change in an instant.

hang in there.

Wow....that's really sad. Unfortunately, we are all living with this damaged economy. It's really scary and horrifying. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hope things get better for EVERYONE

Regardless of finanical status this has affected everyone directly or indirectly, everyone has felt the pinch.

Just sad that its no longer a quiet thing but so obviously bad that its just common conversation.

Re: Sign of the Times (economy)

I feel your pain. I have been laid off for 7 weeks. I was initially optimistic about my search bc I was getting a lot of interview requests, but it has slowed down and it seems like there are so many more interview rounds. Employers are doing even more screening of potential applicants. For one position, I'm about to have my 4th phone interview, all before even meeting anyone face-to-face.

I hope it gets better for everyone. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
