At a loss......re:hair loss
I'm sorry, I know I have posted about this before and even FM'd some of you about this, but I really don't know where to turn. I lose SOOOO much hair every single day. When I shower the clump of hair from the drain is like this size of my fist. Its disturbing and upsetting and I just don't see how I can sustain this hair loss for the next 3 1/2 - 4 mos and not be completely bald.
I have tried everything and now I read it can be a side effect of thyroid medicine and my endocrinologist won't even consider that that is the cause. He says it flat out is not the cause. Everything I read online says it IS a side effect. I was crying to the office mgr on the phone this am, I could just break down right now. I am so upset. I don't want to be bald! Its worse then it was after giving birth to DS!
I just had to vent bc I am so upset and so scared right now and I feel like I have nowhere left to turn.

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
Besides seeing that it is falling out in the shower, is it noticeable? When your hair is dry/styled can you tell you have lost hair? Do you have any spots that look bald? I am 14 weeks & lose a ton of hair in the shower clumps every time. Also if I blow dry my hair the entire bathroom floor is covered in hair. However you wouldn't know if I didn't tell you. It is not noticeable.

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
As a BTDT mommy with 3 kids back to back I feel your pain. I was so distraught over it that after our son was born (6 months ago) I had a melt down. My Dr put me on a different multi vitamin, and then suggested that I got my hair cut as short as I would allow it. So as soon as I left the Dr I went to my salon and the stylist cut 9 inches off of my hair to make it healthy again. I had so many bald spots and was so upset. They also gave me the option of Nioxin or Rogaine, I chose Nioxin its a 3 step process, but it WORKS. They also told me not to use any type of brush, etc on my hair to use my fingers. I just went this past weekend to get my hair cut and I have so much new hair growth. I also have been getting my hair trimmed every 4 weeks. FM for any questions. Hang in there!

I'd say no its not noticable to anyone, but me. I have to wear it up b/c other wise my clothes are covered with hair all day and the same with blow drying, its everywhere in the bathroom and through out the house. Its definately thinning, but I had so much to begin with that I am probably the only one who can tell(and my BFF who is also my hairdresser). I just keep thinking their is no possible way I can keep losing this much hair for another 4 mos! Its so scarey to see all that hair in the drain.

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
I don't know anything about this. But I just wanted to add...
My sister suffers from this, but she's not prego. Her hair is very fine and breaks easily. She tried everything and got tested for everything. It got worse when she lost weight and really she doesn't want to gain weight just to make her hair look good.
I mentioned to her how my hair is amazing since I got pregnant, and I told her I suspect its my prenatals. My hair used to fall out in clumps in the shower. Now I barely see any hair in the drain.
We asked a doctor and it was okay for her to take them too. She's been taking Duet DHA and her hair has been growing stronger and falling out a lot less.
They are expensive, so she tried something other the counter, but it didn't have the same effect. She's back on Duet DHA, takes it every 2 days and its working like magic for her.

I generally lose a good amt of hair, but this is way beyond any normal amt of hair. I take prenatals, maybe I should try switching brands. Thank you for that info. Plus, when I was PG with DS I don't think I lost a single strand for the entire pregnancy. Its so frustrating that I can't get any answers and that my endo blew off the possibilty of it being related to my thyroid meds.

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
Christine, the fact that your endo won't even consider the meds (or even just the thyroid issues by themselves) as being the potential source of the problem would make me at least seek a second opinion. My mother is dealing with this now as well, so I don't think it's related to the pregnancy at all.
I am sorry you are dealing with this - if you want an endo recommendation I can ask my mom who she sees.

Thank you LB. I would greatly appreciate that. They are not that easy to come by and the guy I see is Dr Bravermans BIL so I guess I expected the same level of treatment but I'm just getting brushed off and its so upsetting. Thanks

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
Christine, we've talked about it, and it is absolutely a side effect. Is your hair brittle? Mine was.
Can you make a consult with another endo for a second opinion? I would not go to anyone who took this lightly!

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
You should make an appointment with a dermatologist. I have alopecia which started suddenly when I was 30. I went all over the place before anyone would even take me seriously. (and I had huge bald spots) I finally found Dr Daly. He is Garden City and is part of the national alopecia foundation. I don't know where you live but he is worth the trip. I also see Nurse Munnie there and like her just as well. Hair loss can be a side effect of the thyroid problem but I was under the impression that the syntroid would help all the symptoms related to the thyroid problem. Fm me if you need more info. Hope this helps.

I thought so too until I saw a recent episode of Dr Oz and he said synthroid and similar synthetic thryoid meds can cause your hair to become very brittle and weak. I don't think I have alopcia (studied this somewhat in cosmetology in HS) because I don't have any bald spots. More like thining and lots of new growth and short short hairs from breakage, but thank you so mich for the info. I will look up the dr you recommended. I'm not far from GC.

Re: At a loss......re:hair loss
i had the same problem the onlt difference is that i was not on thyroid meds. i was soooo nervous.. called my ob he said it is not normal to loose hair during pregnancy. your hair apparantly goes into a resting phase. i soooo understand you thinking you might be bald....i feel your pain!!!!!!!!!!
please look into at least discussing with another endo.
fyi...your thyroid normally wacks out during pg. the hair loss did stop on its own so i'm thinking that might happen to you too.
oh it turns out i have a hyperactive thyroid on med 3x a day....
you can fm i understand!
