Need some words of encouragement and support........

I do not get it. I have been going to a nutritonist since the end of January. I have lost 26.50 pounds. I went yesterday and she made me feel like garbage. I work out 3x a week at Curves for about 40 minutes, and I am weighing and measuring everything. The nutritionist told me to maybe be a little hungry..., more exercise... hello I work all week, and I go to the gym religiously 3 x a week. it will empty the fat cells faster. I lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks and I thought that was really good... I am so down in the dumps, I am begining to think i should go to Weight Watchers, I felt ridiculed and worthless afterwards. I have followed everyhting she has told me, except eat 1 slice of diet bread 1-2 times a week, becuase I am so hungry if I have no carbs. I spoke to my physician and he said 1-2 pounds a week is fine not more then that, it would be unhealthy. Then why is this woman telling me differently. I am almost half way to my weight loss goal. I am so down. I need some support.

First off, congratulations to you! Losing weight is no easy feat.

Please listen to your doctor - a one to two pound weight loss per week is HEALTHY and is the best way to go in order to keep it off. You sound like you're committed to the healthy changes that you've made.

As far as your nutritionist goes, she sounds like the awful one tht I saw several years ago! I'm so sorry that someone who is supposed to be a professional in their field made you feel that way Chat Icon Perhaps you should look into switching to a different nutritionist or going to WW, like you said. You need a safe, supportive environment!

Again congratulations for making positive changes and on your weight loss Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally agree with Snozberry. You are paying this nutritionist to get you to think positively about eating and the choices you are making.

I think that you are doing excellent. Does she measure your body fat? All in all, that is what really matters.

I have been eating healthy and going to the gym 5X a week for 5 months now. I only lost 11 pounds, but I have lost 4.5% body fat. I myself am thrilled with the results.

I believe that you are losing the weight in a healthy manner. 1-2 pounds per week is ALL you should be losing. Anything more than that means you are depriving your body of some important nutrients that it needs.

I understand that her job is not to sugar coat people's results, but in your case, I think she is WAY out of line.

Keep up the good work. Us LIFers are proud of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chat Icon I'd go to a different nutritionist or join WW. There's no need to be made to feel bad. 26.7 lbs is a huge amount, and you should feel proud! People lose faster the more they weigh generally, so you are probably plateauing.

That said, I think Curves is good for the initial breaking into working out, but in order to see dramatic results you have to keep upping the intensity and weights, and with Curves you can't really do that. I think of it as the Cliffs Notes version of working out. It's quick and easy and you'll see some results, but not major ones. A regular gym with cardio a few days a week and strength training after might produce better results.

Re: Need some words of encouragement and support........

I also think the weight you have lost in the amount of time you have done it is awesome! And 1-2 pounds a week is a good weight loss. I don't think a nutritionist should be so harsh, even if you were not following her advice. You are paying her to help you make good choices, which is what you are doing, not to treat you like a new recruit at boot camp! I would do as someone else suggested - go to another person, or try WW.

I did Curves for a few years and while I did like it, I noticed that I did plateau after a while. If you just started in January, I think it could still be a good workout for you, but after a while, if you notice that it seems to be getting easier, you might have to add other things to the workout.

Everybody plateaus. You will lose again. Your weight loss is right on target.

Your nutritionist on the other had sounds like she should work in a penitentiary.

Re: Need some words of encouragement and support........

2lbs in 2 weeks is normal and healthy!!! My doctor explicitly told me not to lose more than 2lbs a week. You've lost a lot of weight. Everyone hits a plateau. make sure you're really working thise machines at curves and check your diet to see where you might have been slacking. Plateaus are normal and expected. This nutritionist is a ******! She has no right to yell at you and as a professional she should know that you've come SO far and lost an amazing amount. I think WW is great, but it seems liek what you've been doing has been working too. Don't get discouraged. It's not one weigh in that matters, it's the trend...over the past few months, you've been on a definite losing trend. Keep up the good work!

ETA Curves is not just for "breaking in" to working out. If you push those machines harder you can get back a LOT of resistance, and there are different positions to get more and more resistance. I see extremely fit people in Curves who are sweating up a strm and obviously working hard at the machines. I don't know what the lb. equivalent is to the maximum resistance you can get at Curves, but I'd guess it's pretty high. A lot of people go to Curves and BS, or they don't realize they can push the machines harder to get more resistance back, but it is definitely a strength training workout. I'm not a bodybuilder, but on a good day I am smoking past the other women in terms of itnensity of my workout and the machines don't seem to be topping off any time soon. If you're not getting enough resistence (not hearing the swoosh!) it's time for the owner/manager to tighten the machines!

Honestly...you're totally my idol! I can't for the life of me lose a lb and for you to have lost that much weight... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon That is a huge accomplishment!

I definitely agree with the others...you have to go somewhere where you're being supported. The negativity will just bring you back to where you were...making you gain instead of lose.

Re: Need some words of encouragement and support........

Because you're exercising, it's very likely that you won't notice some of what you're losing if you're only looking at the scale - muscle weighs more than fat, so if you're gaining muscle the scale wont' move much.

What you should do is add some weight training to your exercise routine - it makes a huge difference!!!

Also, please don't join WW - you'd do better off eating healthy low fat proteins and quality carbs. The WW point system doesn't insure that you're eating right, it just counts calories. Also, it allows you to save up all of your points for a "special meal" or treat - but starving yourself all day in order to overeat at one meal is not doing your body any good!

Keep your chin up! 1lb per week is progress! You'll be at your goal in less than 6 months if you keep this up!!!

Actually, this is not quite accurate. There are many people who do what Farah is saying, but actually if you follow the WW plan the way you are instructed to, you do eat a healthy, well balanced diet. They tell you how to include all of the food groups, but many people choose to ignore this and just add points. If that is what one does, than I would agree, it isn't healthy and won't help you lose weight in the long run. WW never recommends that you starve yourself all day- if you save points for a treat, they are extra points for the week, not replacing healthy meals you should eat.

I actually think you should just keep doing whatever it is you are doing. You are having success, it could also be slowing down since you have lost a good amount of weight already.
