How do you apply liquid foundation?

I got a stila sample kit for xmas and there are a bunch of liquid foundations in it. I've never used liquid foundation and have no idea how to apply..

Do you rub it all over your face like you would with a moisturizer? Or do you stipple it in "problem" areas?

Also, are you supposed to put anything under it or over it?

I am so clueless about this.. I've used nothing but a Chanel powder compact for the past 10 years and am clueless when I try to go outside the box.

I usually put moisturizer on first
then apply the foundation by dabbing some on a triangle sponge. Afer its all applied I put some powder bronzer on.

so you put the foundation everywhere by applying with a sponge? I'm going to have to try it.. I don't understand how it'll be smooth on my skin.

Always start in the center & blend outward so it is less concentrated at your jaw line & hair line.

Don't use too much. I blend with my fingers, some times I dot it on with my fingers & blend with a sponge or a foundation brush.

I will preface by saying I don't have a great technique for this

I use a little sponge (from covergirl, comes in a pack of 3 and I change every few weeks) I usually put the foundation on the sponge and pat it all over my face. DH says I look like I'm hitting myself with a piece of tofu

I might start using a brush instead when I move to my house and have more storage space and 2 more bathrooms than I have now!

ETA: I forgot to add- after washing my face I first put on moisturizer and THEN foundation.... however if I have something special going on that day I use primer after the moisturizer but before the foundation. I don't use it everyday because it breaks me out!

I have a foundation brush and put it on in circular motion all over my face. If I have breakout I go back over those spots.
I always apply moisturizer first and 95% of the time a primer too.

I have used my fingers and a makeup sponge in the past but I feel that the sponge absorbs to much make so you waste a lot and you need to change the sponge everyday otherwise it is a breeding ground for bacteria to grow. My fingers I feel are just messy.

I always start with moistrizer followed by a primer.

Than I apply with a sponge starting in the middle & working my way out. Making sure to blend blend blend on the jaw line & hair line.

I use a brush in the summer months because it doesn't soak up as much as the sponge does. So you use less foundation & I prefer the dewiness it leaves.

I finish with a matte bronzer.

I have used both a sponge and MAC foundation brush and I think I prefer the triangle sponge!

I like that it seems to go on lighter with the sponge...

I put on moisturizer and then foundation. I used to use foundation primer but stopped because I don't feel like it does much?! I guess it's good for filling in the lines, but I probably use it once / year! I also use concealer AFTER foundation and many times skip it altogether.

Anyone have any tips for getting a better application with the brush?

I only apply it to certain areas, NOT my whole face.

I do it right after I moisturize.
I start with my nose, then undereye areas, then if needed, other areas.

I usually use my fingers, but if motivated, I'll use a sponge or a foundation brush.

In the summer, I'll mix a dab of foundation with a dab of moisturizer and it's a bit more sheer.

apply mousterizer first then apply with my fingers and then use the mac brush to even out. I put a little on then a little powder after so it doesn't look greasy

Use a foundation brush. It makes a huge difference.

Honestly don't use one of those triangle sponges, they waste so much foundation
They soak it all up, and you go through so much more. Worst mistake because foundation can be expensive

Instead use a foundation brush, you can use it for years and you can wash it and dry it and its good as new!

Mine never gets completely clean or dries completely.
Maybe because I bouth a cheap one in the drug store.
