Does anyone know...

if you are / have been unemployed for a while, are there any government sponsored education programs?

My DH has been out of work since 11/08 and is interested in getting into the healthcare field. I feel like healthcare is always so much in demand, I wonder if there are any grants or anything like that to help people out..

I mean obviously, he is sitting home and we don't have the $ to pay for him to go back to college..

Is this a long shot ?

Re: Does anyone know...

I've been unemployed since 11/08 and I've considered going back to school myself. The state received a lot of money from the Federal government to send people who are unemployed back to school. In order to get this voucher from the state, you have to go to a school that takes these vouchers. Then before you set up your appointment to speak to a counselor from Workforce 1 (unemployment), you have to bring at least 3 want ads (either newspaper or internet) to show the job is in demand. If you're switching careers, you have to look for entry level positions.

I've worked in an office for 12 years and after I was laid off, I've considered healthcare career myself. I'm looking into medical billing/coding. Since I'm changing my career, its nearly impossible to find an entry level position in medical billing/coding. I've never worked in a medical office before. I think if I did work in a medical background before, it would be a lot easier.

You can look into Pell Grants, that's from the federal government.

HTH!

How can I find out which schools accept these vouchers?

Re: Does anyone know...

The website is www.nyc.gov/trainingguide.

If you go to your nearby unemployment office look into attending a workshop for the school vouchers. I know that the place I go to in Flushing has this workshop every Wednesday, but its by appointment only and they book up fast.

Thanks.....I thought this would pay for a degree program, not a training program.
