I want to be a certified teacher. Its what Ive always wanted. I have about 40 credits under my belt from a community college. Stopped going to plan my wedding and get married...never went back. Chat Icon

New year..I want to do this. I am a SAHM and I was more interested in online classes. No school offers a degree in education "online." So I was wondering, could I get my Bachelors in say English or Science or something like that, and then get my Masters in Ed and be able to teach?

I know this is very vague..but I truly dont know how to go about this at all. I am not totally leaning towards teaching in the public schools, private would be fine. I just dont know how to go about researching this...how to begin..I feel like I am stuck without a lot of information. If anyone can point me in the right direction, recommend a way to go or even a school, I would so appreciate it! Thanks!!

It depends on what you want to teach. If you want to be an English Teacher then you can get your BA in English and your MS in Secondary Education. I am not sure how it would work with Elementary Ed though.

I have my BBA in Accounting and went back for a Masters in Education.

I would call your local BOCES with your transcript in hand, they can definitely assist you in this process. I would also double-check with them, because not all on-line universities are accredited in NYS. You don't want to take a bunch of classes that NYS won't give you credit for.

Me too. It doesn't matter what your BA is in, you can get a masters in elem. ed. I also had to take 1 extra math class, geography class and english class b/c I needed more general ed classes.

I received my BA in English and did not take on education class. After graduating, I decided I wanted to be a teacher. Went back for my Master's in childhood education (1-6) and special education (1-6). My Masters was in special education but i became dual certified so i had two certifications. Because my bachelors was in English, all i had to take was the English CST test and i was then certified English (7-12) and also special ed (7-12) so up to 4 certs. Then I was told to get certified b-2 by my school district. I took one last class and became certified b-2 in early childhood education and special education for a total of 6 certs. It was great doing it that way!!

I have my BA in English and my Masters in Secondary Ed.

I would suggest calling a local college to see if you can make an appointment with a counselor to talk about what you need.Chat Icon

since you don't have a BA yet, why not get a BA in teaching and graduate being able to teach. That's what I did and then I got my MS. And since it's required by NYS to get a masters degree to continue teaching - it was tax deductable!
