Teaching about the Holocaust

I decided to make my nonfiction unit on the Holocaust.

I am open to ANY AND ALL suggestions, ideas, lesson plans, etc for teaching this sensitive subject to my middle school special ed students.

I have a small class and I think this is a topic I can really do a lot with. ANY ideas are MUCH appreciated!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Thank you everyone, as always!.....

I have a first-hand account in my basement that you can use, and if I look around, I have teaching materials from the museum in DC I once sent away for...you can also try teaching tolerance (it's a free mag I get, and they have TONS of free resources)...let me know if you need/want anything...

I begin with the picture book The Terrible Things by Eve Bunting. It is an allegory of how different groups were taken, but no one spoke up.

Re: Teaching about the Holocaust

I just finished a unit on the Holocaust using Night by Elie Wiesel, but it was for HS.

Have you ever heard of the Who was/is series?? They're fantastic for ESL/special ed. I think they are about a 4th grade reading level. Each book covers the life of one person, but in a simple humorous way, with LOTS of pictures. The kids are attracted by the caricatures on the covers, and the Anne Frank one could be useful for you.

My kids really enjoyed the movie The Devil's Arithmetic, with Kirsten Dunst.

Re: Teaching about the Holocaust

There is a book that I read when I was young that I loved and still think about. It's a chapter book and called "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit." It's about a 12 year old Jewish girl that has to leave Nazi Germany with her family. I'm not sure of the grade level, but I think I read it late elem school - I was a very advanced reader though.

ETA - I just googled it - Author is Judith Kerr.

You could read Number the Stars (by Lois Lowry) as a read aloud.
