Shin splints and treadmills?

I had shin splints in college when I was playing lacrosse, but gradually they got better. Lately I've been running a couple miles a day on the treadmill and my shin splints are killing me. They aren't so bad on the elliptical, but I feel like I tone faster running. Does anyone feel the shin splints while on the treadmill? Any suggestions?

Re: Shin splints and treadmills?

I get shin splint pain all the time and especially when I run on a treadmill. I make sure to stretch really well, have my shoes laces tied really well, I also do toe taps before and after working out (helps strengthen your front leg/shin mucscles, and I keep the treadmill at a slight incline which seems to feel better then when I try and run on it flat.
good luck

Check to make sure your sneakers are in good shape and are appropriate for your type of foot.

I was going to say the same thing - that is always the first sign that I need new sneakers bad!

This is exactly what you should do.
Shin splints happen when the calves are stronger than the shin muscle, so stretching the calves really well and also strengthening the shin muscles by doing toe taps or other exercises will help. Also, take a break from running for a little bit Beth - give the muscles time to heal.

Re: Shin splints and treadmills?

Beth, a trick I used to do in highschool from the school trainer (when i ran xcountry and played lacrosse) was that while I was sitting in class, I would move my foot pretending to trace the letters of the alphabet, and this strenghtened my shins. You can do this at work when you are at your deskChat Icon
