Can anyone with Empire insurance recommend a psychiatrist...
in Nassau? I have been dealing with very severe anxiety for a few years and it's just been getting worse. I have tried seeing a behavioral psychologist and it really didn't do much. I think I need to try a psychiatrist. Please...if anyone has any recommendations, I would be so thankful.

Re: Can anyone with Empire insurance recommend a psychiatrist...
One of my client's goes to Southeast Nassau Guidance Center in Seaford. I've never met the staff there personally, but have spoken to them on the phone and they seem great.
They also let my client be an active participant in everything, and are not just "pill pushers".
I also believe they have late hours and will totally squeeze you in for an emergency visit if needed.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner she sees is absolutely wonderful IMO.
I'm not sure what insurances they take but it's worth a call IMO.

If you want to list a few from your plan I might be able to suggest one of them.
FYI- I tried to look up the empire plan myself, but cant find psychiatry in their list of providers
Also, most clinics should take it. What part of Nassau are you in?

Thank you so much for taking the time to do that for me. Empire's mental health benefits are actually through another company...I believe it's called Value Options. When I called, they had me go to a site called liveandworkwell.com and use the code "empire". It was there that I could look for drs. I'm in eastern nassau. Unfortunately, the anxiety stops me from going too far.

Re: Can anyone with Empire insurance recommend a psychiatrist...
North Shore LIJ has a clinic which I believe takes all insurance including medicaid. It was VERY helpful for me years ago... Don't be ashamed.. I've battled anxiety for years, and it IS manageable and curable.
Unfortunately the psych I used to see went into private practice & doesn't take insurance.
Good luck and hang in there...

Re: Can anyone with Empire insurance recommend a psychiatrist...
I have heard good things about both Abidi's (husband and wife) I also have worked with Celeste Spencer-Holmes and Richard Zenn who I like.
I have also heard good things about Carol Garbarino and she is affiliated with the women's health center at NSUH.
The clinic AP was talking about is now located at Zucker Hillside, in Glen Oaks, the number is 718-470-8100.
Good luck.

My DH sees Dr. James Cavanagh (he is located in garden city and take the Empire Insurance). You should be able to locate him on value options. He was the ONLY Dr. who took the time to call me back. All the other ones either were not accepting new patients or didn't call me back when I was trying to find a DR for DH to go see.

It's very hard to get a responsible psychiatrist who takes insurance. I've tried for myself and loved ones. I walked out once with 5 prescriptions! FM for more info. In NYC.

See, I'm also worried about that. Do psychiatrists do any therapy with you or do they just put you on meds?

Not really... They really just regulate your meds. You should always receive therapy if you're put on meds.

This has been my experience too. I talk to my therapist, my psychiatrist dispenses meds. The first visit is fairly long--30 minutes, 45 minutes and after that it dwindles a bit. IMO, it's good to talk to people about their specific experiences too.

Re: Can anyone with Empire insurance recommend a psychiatrist...
Most psychiatrists don't do therapy, just med management. They usually only book 15-20 mins per visit. If you are looking for therapy, my suggestion would be a different psychologist. someone with behavioral/cognitive-behavioral training might be best for anxiety. I could recommend someone in Commack, FM if you'd like her info.
