I thought of raccoons right away when I read your post. Any type of food in your backyard?

Re: help with unwanted mystery animal
It could also be possums, which are just as dangerous as raccoons, esp if they are confronted.
Bets idea - call a pest control/animal control and ask them for their advice/help.

Re: help with unwanted mystery animal
its probably a raccoon and if it is the only reason its hanging out in your backyard unexpectedly is if there is a food source that is constant or it has babies. If your trash cans are secure then i would think babies are a factor and would try to call animal control.

Re: help with unwanted mystery animal
Were you able to follow its prints? We have lots of animals roaming our yard: deer, possum, groundhogs, rabbits, stray cats, chipmunks, mice. I don't really have any problem with them until they start building or seeking shelter on or near my property. They may just be passing through your yard. If you are very concerned, then I would call animal control and they'll probably set up traps to catch it.
