Dry personality.. like toast.
I am not quite sure why this bothers me so much, but there is a guy at work (he sits in the cube next to mine) that has absolutely ZERO personality. He never says good morning or joins in with any group conversations going on around him. he keeps to himself & never EVER says anything to anyone (Unless it is related to work, & then he speaks in monotone).
Well yesterday I was finishing something up & happen to still be at work 20 minutes later than usual. He sees me putting on my coat & says "Your here late.. WOW"
So here I am
That rubbed me the wrong way and now I cant stand him
Why are people like this?

Maybe he has social phobia and reluctant to speak due to fear of being judged. He may be right.

I know people who are dry like toast. Interestingly enough, they are hyper-critical of others.

Re: Dry personality.. like toast.
Maybe he's shy? He might have been venturing into attempting a social conversation by observing that you were there late.. that way there isn't a huge crowd in case you dismiss or reject him.
I have the tendency to be very dry and shy sometimes depending on the situation. One of the reasons I don't do GTG's on this board is because I know that my shyness will probably preclude me from participating and that people will think I'm dull witted or just plain boring.
You should give him another chance. Maybe try to engage him in conversation? Ask what he likes or doesn't like? Unless you are fine with him being disengaged... in which case .. ignore him!

maybe he's a sociopath and just observing and gathering information for the shrine he is building. Eventually he will kidnap you, put you in a hole and make you slather lotion on your body...
and your little dog too....
word of advice: do NOT help him move furniture into his truck.

You can't stand him because he spoke to you? That makes me sad. Sounds like he was trying to start a conversation.

Wow. You don't like a coworker? You are supposed to like every single coworker. They can never annoy you. You have to get along with all of them and invite them over every weekend to play parcheesi.
These are the rules of LIF. The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Re: Dry personality.. like toast.
Honestly, as much as those people confuse me sometimes, I also respect them....
so much office gossip gets spread, and I truly feel the more people know about you, the more they have to discuss.
I know stuff about people & their dirty secrets and I barely speak to them, and they are in different departments, even.
I do not talk about my personal life at work AT ALL. I refuse to and steer clear of it.
Let's say someone goes through a break up and they tell people. Well, then one day they come to work in a bad mood and everyone says, "Well, it must be because he is seperating from his wife..."
and it can hurt your career, too, like "Maybe we shouldn't give Bob the new promotion, because if he is going through a seperation, I don't know if he could handle any more stress right now."

these were my first thoughts too
but I WOULD become friends with this person, because the day they decide to go postal in the office, I'll have a better shot at survival

Re: Dry personality.. like toast.
People are jumping on the OP, but I kind of understand. The one thing I really hate is when people are "too busy" to talk to you normally but then talk to you when THEY are in the mood to talk. Are you supposed to be friendly to them even though they are normally rude to you? My labmate does this. I say good morning and she literally walks by me saying nothing. And I know she heard me. But when she's in a good mood and wants to talk, am I supposed to just be friendly too?
It could be that he is shy, in which case I could understand. Maybe he doesn't like talking when there are a lot of other people around.
Or it could be that he's moody, and I really dislike moody people. Am I just supposed to cater to their whims?

To the OP: I understand why that might rub you the wrong way, it's hard to help how we feel, especially when we don't know someone else's situation. I would let it go (which is what I am trying to do with the socially awkward person in my office ) and continue to be civil.

My co-workers probably think this way about me. I am just uber-professional at work and find it hard to open up to people about personal things here.
Maybe that's it?

Re: Dry personality.. like toast.
Me too - i'm actually pretty shy to start off with and usually take a while to really open up to people at work. I just don't want to be part of the usual office gossip chat fests - i like to sit and get my work done. People might think i'm snobby or aloof, but that's ok by me On the other hand, once i feel comfortable at a place, i'm pretty open.
so maybe he's shy and only said something to you when other people weren't around because he's normally uncomfortable
or maybe he's just socially awkward.. who knows
