feeling awful/worried/sick right now-update

before i even post this, I want to say i dont want this to turn into a vaccinne bashing debate, I vaccinate my kids, thats my choice.

I have a toddler and a 7 mo. I took them both in for check up this week, together. I use a group ped practice, I like them all ,but we routinely see one for well visits. sick, whoever you get.
anyhow- my baby was supposed to get pentacel - polio/dTap/Hib, and my toddler was going to start the Hep A series. PEd told me that hep a should have no reaction. btw, they bring two syringes into the room- draw up vials elsewhere.
toddler wakes up the next day, her enitre are is swollen, red and warm. i cal peds office, speak to a nurse, who said its not typcial, btu can happen, and give motrin, keep an eye on it. towards end of the day, i was really worried about her- so i call back and speak with ped. I asked ped if he could hve mixed up vaccinnes, since I know you can get this reaction with dTap. he says he doesnt see how, he labels them, but from what i'm describing, yes, it sounds like he mixed them up. he could not stop apologzing. but, he said he cant be positive, and theres always the off chance toddler just had a weird reaction
so basically, my toddler got an extra polio/dtap/hib, and my 7 mo got an early hep A.
ped is calling an infectius disease specialist to see if we should revaccinate, what to do. and no, i cant take a blood test to check, since baby already had one set, he would have positive titers no matter what.

so, i jsut need some support that my kids will be ok.
also- heres my main dillemma- would you leave over this? we've been using them several years, i like them as a group. woudl you switch to another ped in the practice? not ure if that will be awkward. and please really think, jsut not an automatic leave. I am in the medical field, and believe me, mistakes happen plenty.

I would absolutely leave and find a ped that is more 1 on 1. Mistakes do happen, but they are UNACCEPTABLE when it comes to the lives and well being of children. Anyone else would be suing for malpractice.

MOST importantly, I hope your children are Ok. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: feeling awful/worried/sick right now

This is such a scary situation but most importantly I'm sure your babies will both be okay. I pray that the reaction passes real soon

One part of me says mistakes do happen but another part of me wold prob leave. This would just not sit right with me. I would keep thinking, what if it were something really serious and life threatening that they mixed up. Even though it could happen anywhere I would have such a bad taste in my mouth with that office. GOod luck in whatever you choose to do Chat Icon

Re: feeling awful/worried/sick right now

It definetely sounds like a mix-up because DS's arm got red and swollen after the DTaP vaccine as well.

I dont think the extra doses for your toddler will harm him at all. And although the hep A vaccine coud have been given to your DD earlier than normal, I dont think it will harm her either.

That being said, I would absolutely leave the practice!!!

The double polio won't probably won't have much effect

the early hep A one probably will just not be as effective so hopefully they can be re-vaccinated

I don't know if I'd switch because of this but maybe another one within the practice?

I am so sorry that happened to you. If you are comfortable with the practice I would stay but request a different doctor.

There is one Dr. at the practice I go to who I will not see and no one has had a problem with it, they made a note in DSs file and that was it!

Same here.
I do think mistakes like that could happen in other pediatrician offices & they need to be diligent. Because in the end there really was no major harm, it's not so much the mistake but how they reacted about it.

and I do think they'll be fine.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i wouldn't leave the group...is it really the ped's fault? don't nurses come in to give the shots? going forward i would just be super duper anal about what shot is being given and ask to see the vial. one time my DD got a set of shots at the nurse voluntarily showed me each syringe label before injecting her i was like hmm, wierd, okay, i believe you, lol!

no-the ped does the shots himself. i know in most places the nurses do it, not by me. he says he labels them, so i dont know how it happened.

Re: feeling awful/worried/sick right now

Well first of all, I do hope your DC are ok. I would not be worried about your DC getting the extra vaccine, they revaccinate children all the time whose records they do not have.

I would be more concerned with your young child getting a vaccine before it is recommended. That would be the main concern and that's probably why they calling ID docs (for the Hep A).

Can I ask did the dr bring the syringes in or does a med assistant do it? And who gave the shots? HOW could 2 vaccines be mixed up? Are they the same syringes? I know different vaccines require different syringes, etc.

I think the bottom line here is that something needs to change in that practice so this never happens again, which doesn't help you at the present of course worrying about your DC. I would only stay if they would sit with me and tell me WHAT they have done to rectify this type of confusion from ever happening again and only if they made me feel they were truly sorry and would change their way of doing the vaccines so this cannot happen to ANYONE ever again.

I am so sorry this has happened to you, I dont blame you for being worried, Please let us know what they say.Chat Icon

eek! that would worry me a little then! man how scary! wouldn't this happen to everyone then? or were your kids the first patients to get this "batch" of mixed up vaccines?

doc brings syringes in. and they looked the same to me, but i didnt look too closely. doc draws them up out of a big vial, i think

Well I dont think it's a batch...both children required vaccines, he just gave the wrong one to each child from my understanding of her post.

no, i posted before. doc has large vials of vaccine. draws up amount he needs in a small syringe. does this in another room , med room, iguess. comes back into room wiht two syringes- for my 2 kids. give wrong syringe to wrong kid.
like i said, doc says he labels them, he didnt know how he did this.

So that's very odd, did he seem distracted when giving them? Even the amounts in each syringe should be different, kwim, since it's two different ones. I guess I am just trying to figure out for you how this could have happened. If he didn't LABEL them as he says he does, then how on Earth did he know which one to give? Or like I said, they could have been 2 different amts that he would normally know which was which (they get good at knowing visually what is normal/not).

I do think that it is a bad mistake, but they do happen....if this was the first issue that I had with the practice, I'd probably not leave tbh.

Maybe I would try to make appointments for one child at a time to try to minimize the risk of something happening again. But, I will say that the doctor's office will most likely be SUPER cautious with you from now on, so they hopefully will be on the ballChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

update: i spoke to my ped today, after he spoke ot an infectious disease guy. said ID doc felt its not an issue, all the vaccines are dead, and i should revacccinate both kids properly. what a nightmare.
ped could not stop apolgizing, saying he made a mistake, never happen again, so on
now i need to decide whether i should leave the practice totally, stay with the practice but start seeing a different ped for well visits, or stick wiht original ped.

Re: feeling awful/worried/sick right now-update

I would get a second opinion from someone who is not affiliated with your ped. I would want to know what effects the additional dose could do to the older child and what an early does could do to the baby. Depending upon what is said I would consider going to an attorney to see if your kids will need help for something in the future. I am just so sorry. I would need to find a new ped. for my kids. I could never trust them again. I understand that mistakes happen, but there should have been protocols in place to prevent a mix up like this.

I also want to thank you for sharing this, because I will never take both kids at the same time to the ped for shots. Before your post I would have thought nothing of it. I am just so sorry you are going through this.Chat Icon
