Our Baby Boy's Arrival

My son was born the morning of the blizzard, Feb. 10th 2010 at 9:50am. My due date was Jan 31s, so I had already been under extra monitoring, being at 41 weeks. Superbowl Sun. we were at the hospital for 4 hours for an NST and u/s because they wanted to see more movement from the baby. That night I was having some frequent and bad contractions. I woke up around 1am and thought my water had broke. We called and went to the hospital around 2am. It turned out my water didn’t break, but I was having the bloody show. Again they wanted to see more movement from the baby, so I was hooked up to an IV. I started to have consistent strong contractions, so they admitted me. We thought this was it – but then the contractions slowed and stopped. The dr. on call wanted to induce, but we had wanted to avoid that if possible. We did have an induction scheduled for that Fri. but we were hoping to go on our own. My OB was there for another surgery and spoke w/ the dr. on call – she felt I could still go on my own. We agreed that if the fluid level was good and all was well with baby – we could go home. It was good, so we went home – although the dr. on call hoped we would change our mind (she’s big into inducing any time after 40 weeks). Anyway, I was doing acupuncture a few times and went for two walks on Tues. I went for a check up that day and was about 2.5 cm dilated, 80 – 90% effaced. Then Tues. night around 6ish contractsion started again. They were very low and in my back at times - lots of pressure, but I was able to get through them breathing. Then around 7/8ish they got stronger. I had to lean on DH and use my birth ball a bit, different positions. We were tracking them on contractions.com – while close (7 – 15 min. apart) there was no pattern. They then got stronger, I used the birth ball and DH helped me breathe. They were coming around 5-7 min. apart, so around 2am we called the dr. (We knew from the night before that we wanted to labor at home as long as possible). We got to the hospital around 3am, just as the snow was falling. We got admitted and hooked to IV and moinitor. They checked me, I was about 3 cm and then my water broke. I was able to walk around after a little while though and DH suggested using the birth ball since it helped at home. I had so much pressure down there. They asked about pain mgt. and I said I was trying to go natural. They never asked again after that, not sure b/c it progressed quickly or to respect my wishes. Had they asked or things didn’t progress, I probly would’ve taken something. It was the urge to push that you have to fight that was so hard. Dh helped me breathe through contractions, I was then about 7-8. I cried b/c I wanted to be at 10, the nurse checked again and was like (no dear, but its closer to 8) – to make me feel better. The nurses were awesome. One came and saw how good DH was doing, she didn’t want to interrupt our flow but gave extra support. While DH helped me breathe, she massaged my back – both telling me I could do it (in between my cries of exhaustion and wanting to give up). I was then close to 10, but not yet. The Dr. was in the room then, she was able to push the cervix out of the way during a contraction to get me to 10 – I was so glad. Then the pushing began – overall I was pushig about an hour. And yes, I did those things we don’t want to do (poop and pee), but you don’t care. I just wanted to push and get the baby out. DH held one of my legs, the nurse the other while I pushed. Finally at 9:50am, my son was born – with the blizzard snowing outside. The cord was around his neck, but she was able to quickly remove it. The pushing was so hard, but I just knew at the end would be my baby. It was all so difficult and exhausting, but so worth it. I ended up with a 4th degree tear, so right after he was born, she stitched me up for another half an hour. I was able to hold him though and enjoy being with him. It was a whirlwind of activity and still seems so surreal. I can’t believe he’s here and we are so in love, sleep deprived, but in love Chat Icon Chat Icon
