i'm married to a special ed teacher - you folk are some of the most underappreciated bodies in school.
Amen to that!
"Easy" is not on the list of words to describe that job.
Dedicated, hard-working, and amazing, however, are on the list of words to describe special educators.
Well said. And as the sister of someone with autism, I can say that I have seen the results of amazing, dedicated special educators.

I'm a SAHM. Not even gonna repeat what people have said to me about my "job" compared to theirs.
If I were a SAHM, and someone said something about how "easy" my job was, I would reply "Oh, do you have to clean up your boss's poop several times a day too?"

Re: Your job is so much easier than MY job.....
i had a teacher once tell me that... so i replied with, "yeah... so go back to school, get your 70 credits in speech pathology, do your internships and externships, and then take the proper tests, and then when you work in a school like me and you only see 2-3 kids at at a time, make sure you have a lesson plan for each of the 8 totally different sessions in the day, and you can be on easy street just like me!"

Re: Your job is so much easier than MY job.....
ugh all the time....usually it's "you have it soo easy...you only work 180 days" Well those 180 days are EXHAUSTING. Teaching other people's kids on all different levels, topics, and subjects is not for everyone, and I laugh at the thought that some people who say this would not last one day.
Just to get to work those 180 days I had to: get 2 degrees, 3 certifications, canvas all over LI for a job, then go BACK to school to get paid more.
Not to mention the fact that while yes, I do work from 8-3 technically, my day does NOT end there. Work insists on coming home with me, no matter how hard I try to leave it at work.
And while I am off summers, I'm going to school, and planning for the upcoming year!

Maybe your coworker is just socially awkward. I wouldn't take it to heart

Excellent point!
Why would any teacher think Special ed is easier than a subject? Because of the smaller class size? I don't have kids or teach, but even I can tell you that what you do is not any easy job. You have to teach children who learn differently, plus deal with with the emotional & behavioral needs.
The classes are smaller for a reason--those kids need more attention.

Wow that is unbelievable. My DH managed a McDonald's for several years before getting into his current field, and he said it was TOUGH! I cannot believe that guy said that.

Re: Your job is so much easier than MY job.....
Another special Ed teacher here. I five year olds with autism. I have 6 students and 2 paras in the room, and my job is completely EXHAUSTING. If I come home tires from work, my husband is like "oh you only worked 6 hours" and your off constantly....well I want him to try 6 hours of working with the population that we do. Special Ed teachers are so unappriciated sometimes

I actually toured Hamburger University for work and know the type of training and classes that you have to go through! Not to mention the customer service skills you have to have.

Yes from DH (I am a SAHM). And while it definitely has it's perks, there are downsides to it also (no sick time, very long hours, the screaming), but he doesn't want to hear it--he thinks I have it good.
I don't think this is what you were looking for, but I do understand your sentiment.
