NYC teachers - Contract

Has anyone been keeping up with the contract negotiations?

NYTimes article

Right now Bloomberg wants to cut sick days in half, change layoffs from senority to merit, no more ATR if excessed, change tenure to include teacher performance (aka state tests)and a 2% raise, but only on $70,000 of a teachers salary. So for a lot of teachers it would be less than 2%.

The city and union are at an impasse and will have an arbitraitor.

How much do you think will end up in the contract?

At this rate I rather take a small/no raise and leave things the way they are!

Re: NYC teachers - Contract

I agree,,,

the ATR thing scares me as I am currently an ATR..it is very hard to get a position in my certification bc they are cutting but not hiring...well why would they when they have me working in two schools and neither school has to pay Chat Icon Chat Icon

The merit piece is scary bc who and what determines that? test scores? Principals?

Ughhhh

Agreed here as well...I mean, corporate America gets more than 5 days sick/off in a year..that's not right! As for merit pay/hiring/firing, it's such a mess and hopefully our union sticks to its guns....oy...

This is why I am really thinking about getting out. They cannot agree on a fair way to evaluate us, and if this goes through we will see principal's pets being kept while good teachers who are disliked getting let go, for good. The deck is stacked in favor of new teachers.

If tenure is based on test scores, how would they determine Sped teachers or even those whose students do not take state tests?

I may be wrong- but I think all kids take the state exams now. I know all the special needs kids in my school take them.

They are also looking to base tenure decisions for new teachers on the scores.

It will be used for teachers in the subject areas that are tested. So it makes it even more unfair b/c some teachers will be judged by them, but others will not.

Re: NYC teachers - Contract

There are so many factors that play into merit pay. What about HS Art/Music/Phys. Ed teachers? What about the teacher who teaches creative writing or the Research Methods class--classes where tests aren't administered? Sigh. There are so many layers to this mess.

Most SpEd students are required to take state exams at the high school level. The only exception to this is d75 students or others going for IEP diplomas.

I'm a guidance counselor; I wonder how "merit" would work in my case? I kind of like the fact that principals can excess by merit. (Lets face it, experience is not a synonym for quality in all cases). BUT... anyone with a vindicitive admin is now totally at their mercy. Yikes.

And what the heck is up with cutting the sick days? If we can only get paid for the number of sick days in our CAR during a maternity leave, they've just cut that, too.

Geez, what did Bloomy's teachers do to him to make him hate us all so much???

Students going for IEP diplomas still need to take the alternate assessment which gets graded as well.
As for what bloomberg wants - it is just a negotiation tactic. He starts low, the union starts high and they meet somewhere in the middle. Happens all the time!
