Birth story of Mason Alexander
As many of you know, I went past my due date again and was scheduled for an induction on 3/4/10. I went to bed on Monday night with some slight BH, but nothing major, and certainly nothing different then I had been feeling for weeks. I woke up to go to the bathroom arounf midnight and had a contraction. It felt different from BH, but it wasn't crazy and I fell back asleep. I got woken up by another one around 1am-ish. I stayed in bed and had another one a coule of minutes later. I decided to get up and go on the computer and started clocking the contractions. Even though they had just started, they were already coming every 2-4 minutes. I went and woke up DH and initially he was annoyed at me for waking him. But when I had a contraction, he saw that I was serious. We brought DS to my in laws and headed to the hospital. I got to the hospital and the contractions were probably 3 minutes apart. I had an internal and they said I was close to 5cm. Right after the internal my water broke and the contractions started feeling stronger, closer and longer. I asked for the epidural and they said they needed to send my bloodwork down and they needed to get a full bag of IV fluids in me before I could get anything. They had a hard time getting into my veins and now I'm all bruised up and look like a druggie. LOL! They put me in a delivery room and my midwife got there. At this point I was having a really hard time and was begging for drugs, but they still couldn't give them to me. The midwife didn't want me laying down because she said it makes things worse. So she had me standing and leaning over the bed. I have never experienced pain like that before and I was not a happy girl- nor was I very nice at that point. They finally had the anestegiologist come up and I knew I would get some relief soon. There was no way I could have had an internal at that point, but the midwife guesses I was at 8cm, if not more. They gave me a spinal first so I would get immediate relief and then they gave me the epi too. I felt like a whole new person. But then the chills set in. I shivered for about a half hour before my body regulated. The midwife didn't want to just wait until I was 10cm, which I probably was at that point, she wanted to wait until the baby moved further down so that I would have to push less. She came back about 45 minutes later and I had just pressed the epi button, so she thought we might have to wait until it wore down a little. She had me do a practice push just to see and I was pushing just right, so I pushed right through the epi. I would say I pushed for about 15-20 minutes and he was here. Mason Alexander, 8lbs5oz, 21.5in.
