stabbing at my school today
They had us on lock-down over the loud speaker & didn't tell us why. Just said to lock our doors & no one could leave any room. The kids were going nuts, trying to get out of the room. The stabbing was gang-related, the kid was stabbed twice with a steak knife which an accomplice then threw out the window. The wounds were not life-threatening thankfully, although there was blood everywhere. The sad thing is that no one was shocked because incidents happen all the time. Administration is so concerned with Differentiation & Assessments & Quality Review & graduation rates... Meanwhile kids are smoking pot in the hallways, peeing in the stairwells (no I'm not exaggerating), chasing each other & screaming at the top of their lungs through the halls while banging on classroom doors, throwing books out the windows, graffitiing the stairwells, blasting their music in classrooms & cursing us out when we ask them to shut it off.... teachers get threatened, spit on, and worse, all the time. It's like the kids run the school. And then the violence like what happened today is just really sad. I just don't know what to think of it all sometimes.

Re: stabbing at my school today
You just described my school as well. Numbers are more important than safety. I'm sorry you have to deal with this

That's so scary! I'm so glad you're ok! You really need to get out of that school! Keep looking for Nassau schools. You would be so much happier (and safer) there!

WOW I don't work too far from your school. I didn't know it was that bad. I hope you can get out. And you are right about not having priorities straight...it's a freaking joke sometimes!!!

Re: stabbing at my school today
We were on Lock Down on Friday as well. I teach in an Elementary schoool BUT the high school had a race related brawl. This was the second incident of the week.

Re: stabbing at my school today
I think I know the school you teach at and my question is What type of job are your safety agents doing if a knife got in? In addition, the theory of several smaller schools on your campus is not working.
What do they plan on doing now?

We don't have metal detectors on a daily basis, but even so, from what I've seen, the safety agents don't do much. They are way too friendly with the kids, rather than enforcing safety & order. Kids hang out in the hallways all day long & sneak in & out of the building all day long & generally no one stops them.
Probably tomorrow the police will be there scanning the kids before they enter. They should really do this every day, although the kids have all sorts of tricks for getting their phones (and probably much worse things) into the building, even with the scanning. But I still think it's better to have it daily as a deterrent anyway.
I have no idea what's going to happen in the future to prevent something like this from taking place again. This was actually the second stabbing of the year, although the first took place outside the building at the end of the day, so not as many people knew about it.

I think the SA's are a real problem. We have scanning everyday and still have issues with students sneaking things in. A lot of the SA's sneak things in for them....Ipods, phones etc. They act like they are friends with the kids and are a waste of money.
One day I stood outside my classroom after the bell had rung and watched a female SA flirt with a student instead of herding all the kids in the hallway to class. They spend more time in the stairwells texting than anything.
When I first started working at my school 8 years ago it was never like this. The kids were afraid of the SA's and we had actual police officers stationed at our school. It has just gone down hill in the last few years and "they" wonder why!

Re: stabbing at my school today
My school has metal detectors and cameras in the hallways and there are still fights, muggings, drug-use, urination/defecation, sexual activity etc. that goes on in the stairwells and empty classrooms where there are no security except for an underpaid school aide. And my school is considered to be above average!
