I really wonder why some people opt not to fill out the form? I mean I got it in and filled it out and sent it back today, not a hard thing to do but yet i hear so many people refuse to fill it out.
Why do you think?

DH and I were laughing about the form - it asks about who will be living in the home on April 1st - I don't know because it's not April yet.
I don't like giving out personal info, but this is different. This means government monies, programs and services allocated to my area.
I'm just not giving them my phone number.

I read an article that said people who either live in illegal apts or are here illegally believe it can be used against them.
I got mine yesterday and will fill it out this weekend.

I plan on filiing mine out during lunch today and sending it out.
I just got a little  as to why they would send a ltr out 1 week b/4 saying that we will be getting the census letter soon... that was a waste of money!

Or the commercial during the Super Bowl...I'm sure that cost ALOT!! And the continued commercials..

Does anyone remember the last one? It was much longer for me in 2000. Did they streamline it this time or do they only pick some people to get the long form?

I think that it was so people didn't throw it ouot as junk mail. It made people more cognizant fo the mail.

I got the letter last week, and then yesterday got a post card with the phone number to call if you have questions.
What a huge waste of money and paper.

I didn't get al etter aying it was coming. . .
Unless my DH just recycled it.
I didn't ge the census form either.
The last time, I did fill it out, w/ my roommate, and we still had people coming to our building looking for us.
I think they were looking for the people below us (it was a house with owners on the first fl & apts on the 2nd & 3rd floor--all legal), but they wouldn't listen to my roomate, so she filled it out again.
So, fill it out, or people will come looking for you!

I never got a letter saying it was coming but got ours (and my neighbor's ) yesterday. Hopefully DH didn't throw it in the garbage

What do they do if 2 get sent to a house but only one gets sent back?
We got one to our address and one to our address "side",which was probably the illegal apartment that used to be in thebasement.
If we don't send that one back, will they come knocking? Is there an option on it to put that this address doesn't exist anymore?

The census bureau feels that the benefit will outweigh the cost so they have awareness and mailings

Here's why they're going door to door on the east end (from Sag Harbor Express)
On the East End of Long Island, we are doing an “update and enumerate” [meaning going door to door to give the survey] which is a little different than the mail back form. In other regions of New York state, we are doing the mail back. On the East End there is a high vacancy rate because of the seasonal nature of the community. On Long Island . . . we do the “update and enumerate” because so many people here don’t get mail delivered to their homes. We will be going out to the entire North Fork and South Fork beginning on March 16. They do this [the update and enumerate] in Alaska too . . . We want to make sure we do the best job. We knock on every door and if you are a homeowner or renter you will be counted in this way.

I am a census taker  I will be going house to house on the North Fork counting heads. I have been "in training" for 2 days and am SHOCKED at the waste of paper!! Huge waste of money! Send back the forms even if it's a duplicate otherwise someone WILL be coming to your house to verify.

OK, call me crazy, but being that it just asks race, age and # of people in the house, how does that in turn mean better programs for people? It does not say anything about income, education, job, community involvment... I just wonder how race & age can tell the Gov't anything.

If there are a large number of kids under 18 in a certain district more gov't money would be alloted for school programs and the like.
As for a race, lets say a certain district has a large number of immigrants. Gov't money and services would be tailored to meet their specific needs.
