A girl that I work with (about 26y.o.) is constantly having meltdowns. Her office is about 15ft from mine, maybe less.

One time I heard her yell, "You g-y A-- MFer!" and then she slammed her door so hard that the building shook!

Then another time she was yelling at a male co-worker and was like, "I sent you the F-ing email at 2 F-ing 47. Don't F-ing blame me because you're too much of a dumb A-- to check your F-ing email." The male co-worker ended up screaming some obscenities back at her and then walking away. She ended up storming out of the office crying because she "does so much for this place" and she's "not taking it anymore" and left for the day.

BOTH would be disciplined (Ie: written-up) - without a DOUBT.

That woman needs to be reprimanded for her continued VERY unprofessional behavior. I can't believe people just let her act that way. That's disgusting and her actions can reflect on the entire office as a whole, if a client came in.

Why has she been allowed to continue like this?

ETA: The guy who responded to her with obscenities should also be written up, since 2 wrongs don't make a right.

You know, I'm not really sure. I believe maybe it is because our office is pretty laid back. She has been here for about 4 years and I think she just gets away with whatever she pleases.

The owner of the company and the vice president had a meeting with the two "offenders" and sort of made them apologize to each other and work out their differences. That was the only action that was taken.

In a normal company I'd say YES that requires disciplinary action.

However, in my company- cursing and screaming and acting like a general d-bag is the norm from the higher ups on down- so here, that kind of outburst is just another day on the farm! Chat Icon

I kind of wish that they were.

We have customers coming in very frequently, not to mention conference calls, etc. I am very lucky that no one was here and I wasn't on a phone call because that would be extremely difficult to ignore or try to explain.

Yup. Something similar happened here recently where an employee went off on his supervisor - he was written up and it's in his personnel file.

I work in a very corporate environment and we are all in open cubicles, including the bosses, so no door slamming here. Even with 50 people on my floor, you can hear a pin drop most of the time.
That type of behavior is NOT acceptable here and both offenders would be reprimanded by their superiors and by HR. Repeat performances would warrant dismissal.

She sounds like she has a LOT of growing up to do. That type of behavior is not professional and not excusable. If she can't cut it, then perhaps she should look for another job.

eta : If I had to work around that, I would be complaining to the bosses and to HR that her outbursts are affecting the office in a very negative way. You did mention that there are outside people in your office for meetings etc.

Nope.

The behavior that is acceptable here is pretty disgusting.

That first offense would have resulted in termination. Easily could be construed as sexual harassment and that is absolutely NOT tolerated.

Absolutely yes. Verbal warning with documentation, written warning if it continued and then termination if it still continued.

If I were running the company, it would be immediate termination - no matter what the position.

In my company, first employee - would have been written up immediately, possible termination - unless there was some kind of mental breakdown (which would require treatment/disability leave).

Second employee would have been written up.

That would DEFINITELY NOT FLY in my company! Both of them would be written up and possibly terminated...immediately!

depends on your workplace, where i work now you would be fired, where i have worked (three jobs leading up to this one) that is common place.

Re: If something like this happened at your workplace, would either of these employees be disciplined?

Totally unprofessional, and they should have included that they won't put up with such behavior instead of just concentrating on the fight between the two.

In my job... it varies. We had someone who would throw fits, and just be disruptive and unprofessional. Until some of us started doing our own constant complaining to their manager, nothing was done. They were eventually fired for non-performance.

We have another loudmouth who is always the source of noise and I gave up on that changing. I wear headphones now to block it out.

Re: If something like this happened at your workplace, would either of these employees be disciplined?

It's a little lax around here... the first offense would probably be mentally noted, but ultimately overlooked. In that vein, the male coworker probably wouldn't be disciplined unless it became a pattern. But for continued behavior like that, like what you described from the female coworker, yes, disciplinary action would be taken.

Sounds like something I could expect from one of my clients (they have brain injury and mental health issues). And even then, the behavior is always addressed.

Good luck to her if she ever ends up leaving and ends up in a more professional environment.

YES they would absolutely be spoken to. My company is very structured and disciplined. There is no way she would get away with that. We would probably refer her to the EAP.

Thanks for all of your responses. I am going to make a complaint to our HR person just so that it is on file. It is extremely disruptive. Chat Icon

I've worked in companies where this behavior is ignored, and it occurred in HR!

Re: If something like this happened at your workplace, would either of these employees be disciplined?

Yes. Written up at the VERY LEAST.

Years ago, the maintenance guy messed up the wiring in the computer, telephone room.

The IT guy flipped out and cursed at the maintenance guy. He was fired on the spot. Not because he was wrong about the issue the other guy had created but because he cursed, yelled and was completely unprfessional about it.

At any place I ever worked it would depend on the employee, who favored that person and who heard.
