Census people showed up...instead of mailing

So a lady showed up at our house today for the census...i told her we never got anything in the mail...she said out here (Hampton Bays) they weren't mailing them...weird...just thought i'd give a heads up people may be showing up at your door!

East of Griffing Ave in Riverhead which means the North and South Forks are who is getting a physical head count

Did you check that they were legitimate?

Remember, just hte number of people living in the house & the racial breakdown - NO social security #s (not saying you'd fall for that but you never know who else might)

Here's why from 27 East:
Census Bureau employees will go house to house on the East End this year to count a population that federal officials say has proven to be elusive because of seasonal fluctuations and a burgeoning immigrant population.

In the past, the federal government has counted people on the East End using the standard method of mailing out census forms and hoping that they get returned. But that strategy presented a problem in the two most recent censuses, in 1990 and 2000, because so many people in the towns of Southampton, East Hampton, Riverhead, Southold and Shelter Island use post office boxes instead of home addresses to receive their mail, according to Patricia Valle, the assistant regional census manager in charge of Long Island, Queens, and Rockland and Westchester counties.

“In 1990 ... there were thousands and thousands and thousands of questionnaires that were returned as undeliverable,” Ms. Valle said, explaining that census forms can be delivered only to addresses associated with actual residences. She said that the door-to-door method will save U.S. Census Bureau from going back over the five East End towns to fill in the blanks that have remained decade after decade due to the undelivered forms.
ETA: While we use our house address, I teach in a private school out east, and the students come from Montauk- Westhampton. I'd say 75% of the parents use a PO Box rather than a house address.

I heard on the radio that there are a few scams going around with going door to door. Please be careful!!

I wonder if I can get in trouble if I don't answer my door, since I'm home alone with my son?

We had career day at my school and a census employee was there talking to the kids. They will be coming around if you don't mail them in! If you didnt get one you can call 311 and they will tell you the nearest place you can go pick one up to fill out!
