prenatal vitamins?
Hi ladies!
I'm crashing - I'm due with my first baby on 9/28 but here is my question...
I have been taking Walmart's SPring Valley Prenatals for a long time now... and continued them into my pregnancy
My OB told me to try other ones with DHA - but everyone that he gave me made me very sick
The only pills that I can keep down is the Spring Valley...
My question is - am I doing my baby harm by not taking something with DHA?
I'm just worried and would love some insight! Thanks!!

Re: prenatal vitamins?
IMO....you are not going to hurt your baby!! With my first DS the only vitamins I could take was ones the doctor gave me were the prenatal ones that helped stop nausea, and he was just fine, 2 days late 8lbs 5 ozs. With my 2nd DS I could not take anything. They all made me sick...even the childrens vitamins. I can't tell you how much money I spent on vitamins!!! So with NO vitamins he was a healthy 9lbs 2 oz baby!! So don't worry!!! As long as you eat healthy you and your baby will be fine!!!

Re: prenatal vitamins?
Honestly....(I am a ped. dietitian) I would take the DHA over the prenate! It is super important b/c DHA is transfered via placenta and is crucial for brain and central nervous system growth. Pregnant moms need about 300mg of DHA during pregnancy.
My best advice to save money and get the benefits is to get a generic prenate (for 5 bucks) and the over the counter DHA supplement Expecta Lipil for 10 bucks - so you only spend 15 dollars
HTH!

Re: prenatal vitamins?
I think women have been having babies for a long time without the benefit or advantages of DHA and lots of healthy babies were born. I dont think you are doing harm. if you cant keep it down then you're probably not getting much benefit out of it anyway.
maybe try the separate DHA supplement and see if that still makes you sick.
I used Rainbow lite prenatals b/c i started with those while TTC and continued b/c i was so sick to begin with having reflux when i got pregnant, that this was something that DIDNT bother me..so i didnt toy with it.

Re: prenatal vitamins?
can you maybe take the dha seperatly from the prenatals? i know they sell it seperatly you can try that.. if not i'm sure your not harming your baby, until recently dha wasnt in them and we all were born fine lol

i always took the expecta DHA - it did NOT have a fishy taste (as some can)....and it never bothered my OVERLY sensitive stomach!
