Rehab centers on the island?

Does anyone have any experience with any rehab centers on LI? Specifically after a stroke and brain injury - looking for PT and Speech.

Re: Rehab centers on the island?

My mom is young, just turned 61 last week and prior to this fall/stroke was fully capable. So we are looking for something that will be sorta intense.

TIA

Re: Rehab centers on the island?

You can look into Transitions at North Shore.

I had my brother at the Brady Institute at Jamaica Hospital.

As a hospital it was ok. For brain rehab I thought it was excellent. I like their therapists. Their neuropsychologist went to Mt. Sinai and I really liked him though.

Franky the top places are Kessler, Mt. Sinai and Rusk in this area.

I urge you to get her to the best place, not just the closest.

I dragged myself to Jamaica hospital almost every day for 4 months because it was the best of the places that would take him.

eta: please get her to an acute rehab place. Don't do subacute...they won't work her as hard.

I'm so sorry this happened. I wish her the best in her recovery.

Is your mom in the hospital now? Acute rehab gets their patients from the hospital. If she is in the hospital, you should talk with the care managers/social workers b/c they will direct you with who will take her insurance and things like that.

Thank you, I plan on doing that tomorrow. Yes, she is in the hospital in the Neuroscience ICU. The problem is she is up in CT at Yale, so I need to do the research down here in NY for rehab.

I'm a PT, i've worked at several Acute Rehabs, I highly recommend the following that I have personally worked at: Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center, Montefiore/Albert Einstein in the Bronx; I was a student at Rusk and they are among the top in the country.

I've never worked there but i've also heard Burke in Westchester is awesome.

Requirements to be accepted into acute rehab are being able to tolerate 3 hours of rehab a day (PT,OT and ST). Subacute is not as strict and gives less, but according to patient tolerance/need. I've also worked in plenty of subacutes.

All the best for a speedy recovery for your mom. FM if you have any questions.

Re: Rehab centers on the island?

My grandfather went to two. One was in Glen Cove across from the mansion - it was the most disgusting place and we couldn't wait to get him out of there. I swear they made him worse. THen he went to the rehab behind LIJ in manhasset - the most wonderful place. HE wasnt there for a strole so I'm not sure if they specialize in that, but the staff and facility was wonderful

Re: Rehab centers on the island?

my mom had a stroke last year, and when she was released from the hospital for rehab they sent her to St. Charles which is an acute facility and they did a great job. She had some issues a few months ago and she went back into rehab in West Babylon, and now she is in Consolation (behind Good Sam) and she is in a sub-acute facility and she is not getting nearly enough support as she should be getting. Right now she isn't allowed to get out of bed on her own or walk on her own, but they want to release her next week for my 74 yr. old dad to take care ofChat Icon Needless to say St. Charles had her ready to be independent before they released her.
