Strange high pitch chirp - what birds are awake at night?
Every time my parents go outside in the back to see what kind of bird it is, it's like it knows they are looking for it and stops chirping. Then when they go inside it starts chirping again.. They said it's been doing this for 4 nights straight now. It does not do this during the day. I told them maybe it's a bat? I don't know.. weird right?

Re: Strange high pitch chirp - what birds are awake at night?
mockingbirds are known to do that at night, but are they here in NY?
I assume you live in NY, but I shouldn't
I have heard of research that was done because a lot of birds sing at night now during mating - because noise pollution during the day drowns out their mating calls and chance of getting laid.
So, they kind of had to re-arrange their booty-call schedule.

Hmm...They could also probably call up the park maybe or some nature preserve place for nature/animals. I bet they will give them a good answer. I think a lot of birds aren't just on LI as whole, but certain areas have certain kinds of birds, too.

I actually have the same thing going on at my house. I have no idea what kind of bird or whatever it is making the same high pitched noise. Only happens at night, and unfortunately its to dark to get a look at it.
My best guess is that its a Pterodactyl.

It probally is Frogs, i only moved into my house a few months ago, and do live near a natural spring. It seems to be high up in the air though. But i know the direction of sounds can be deceiving.

I'd agree, we used to live literally ON Belmont Park. Also there are small birds, but the singing is lower pitched and very distinct. There are tons of Owls too in the Park.

Re: Strange high pitch chirp - what birds are awake at night?
You want to hear something funny?
My DH and I had this for a few months. Our bedroom windows are right in the middle of a big tree and we heard them all night long--it wasn't annoying, just puzzling; I mean, what bird chirps at night? During the day we wouldn't notice it and when we got closer to the open window, the sound would seem to DECREASE. Strange, huh?
Well, yeah, dope #1 and dope #2 didn't realize for like 3 or 4 months what the sound actually was.....
A freakin' sound machine on my dresser in our bedroom that we never used, but somehow must have switched on without realizing it. Yeah, it was set to "Sounds of the Forest."
Is this a possibility?

Re: Strange high pitch chirp - what birds are awake at night?
Not sure if it could be the same thing, but I noticed VERY active, loud blue jays at my barn the other night (in the dark). They were mating and making these very high pitched chirping sounds throughout the whole drawn out ordeal. There were a ton of them, too. It was like a blue jay orgy. Either that or they were playing Marco Polo...

I would bet that its mockingbirds. they are known to be active at night and they are all over the island.
