Varicocele Surgery
My DH has been diagnosed with a small varicocele vien and low testosterone. The urologist is treating the low testoterone right now, in hopes that DH's sperm quality will improve from the medication he is on. If it doesn't, he thinks DH might nead varicocele surgery.
Has anyone else DH had this procedure done? Was it successful?

Re: Varicocele Surgery
Hi there!
My DH had the surgery and we think that it definitely helped improve his counts. However, my DH also had testicular cancer, which is when we found out about the varicocele. So I'm not sure if we can say for certain what made the counts go up, but in the beginning they were about 3-5 million, up to 10 million 6 months after the varicocele surgery, now up to 15 million just over 1 year later.
FM me if you have any questions!

Re: Varicocele Surgery
My son-in-law had this surgery last May. It took several months to see noticeable results, but it definitely worked. My daugher is now pregnant with the help of 1 round of unmedicated IUI. Good luck!

Re: Varicocele Surgery
First of all, what medication is he on to treat low testosterone? Most testesterone medications will "kill" or "stop" sperm production...
My DH had bilateral surgery with the top US urologist who told us that the size of the vein matters the most in seeing results.....DH's was the size of a spaghetti (literally big like that) on his right testicle and smaller on the left....he removed both....he was then given Clomid for 6 months which helped his T levels (from low 200 they went up to 600s)....his sperm parameters improved but we still needed IVF to conceive...

Re: Varicocele Surgery
My DH had the surgery and was being treated for low testosterone with Clomid. We still did IVF because we really didn't have time to wait due to my age. All my other IVFs were BFN but after the surgery it worked! I'm now 32 weeks pg. Not sure if it was the surgery that helped.

Re: Varicocele Surgery
My DH had the surgery as well. I also have PCOS. We wound up eventually doing a TESE procedure and then IVF / ICSI and now have our son. Good luck

Re: Varicocele Surgery
My DH had this surgery.. twice! The first time he had a complication and was too embarrassed to say anything. So last may he finally spoke up and had to have the surgery again. The doctor sent him for a semen analysis a few months post-op and said everything looked perfect...

He is on Clomid to help the testosterone levels. His vein is small (not sure the exact size). We did IVF in 2007 and conceived our DD. We did another round of IVF and a FET in 2009, both resulting in BFN's. We ran out of our IVF coverage after the 2nd one and paid for the FET out of pocket. We are saving funds to do another IVF, but wanted to consult with a urologist to see if there was any possible way to increase DH's sperm quality to even have the possibility at a successful IUI.
Thank you for your feedback.

Re: Varicocele Surgery
It's great that your DH is on Clomid, it is the medication to be on! I just hate when doctors perscribe testesterone meds which in fact shut down sperm production.
I am sorry about your recent BFNs...I know exactly how it feels....I am not sure of your Dh's numbers so I can't really comment but I know that those that need IVF to conceive usually have very very low numbers and it takes about 6-12 months to see improvments (if any with small vericoceles) after the surgery and I don't know you if you want to wait that long....We were told that IUI would never be an option for us....the numbers are just too low.....I hope it is different for you! GL!
