applying for a second position at the same place

How would you handle this situation?

Applied for a posted job a while back. They are still accepting applications, so no chance you'd have heard about the position yet.

You just noticed another position (technically probably a "lower" position, but not by much) in which you are also REALLY interested. This position is new and wasn't posted when you applied for the first position. You are actually MORE interested in this second positions, so don't want to miss a chance to apply. You'd still take the first position, so basically you want to be considered for both.

Would you send in a new cover letter (attaching the same resume) that references that you also applied for the other position? Or would you leave that out? A new, different cover letter is a must to emphasize skills for this second position, but the resume would remain unchanged.

FWIW, this is in the world of academia (graduate school level), not corporate if it matters.

TIA.

I probably would address the initial application for the first job in the cover letter, b/c I feel otherwise, you would *appear* to hope they weren't "with it" enough to notice that my resume was sent to them twice.

the WORST thing that can happen is that they are doubly flattered by your interest....or really the worst thing is that they don't call you.

but I always feel better pointing out the elephant in the room before it starts trampling on my stuff, kwim?

I agree.

Also often times on employment applications, they ask if you have applied for a position previously.

Also with the number of resumes passing through the doors these days, it can't hurt to call & follow up.

Thanks.

FWIW, I don't think it's an elephant in the room or a negative... just never encountered this situation previously.

For you, if you haven't been contacted by a recruiter or hiring manager yet for position #1, then i'd go ahead and put your hat in the ring for position #2. Make it easy for the person reviewing resumes and point out that your primary interest is in joining said academic institution and you would welcome the opportunity to be considered for position #1 and position #2.

Thanks for the response> I like that language and think I will use it in my cover letter! That's perfect.
