Preschool eval at Boces in Bellmore
DD has her evaluation on Thursday at Boces Readiness Center in Bellmore. I have heard great things about that school. She qualified for full time. She is already on wait list at Barbara Wilson and Little Village said there are no openings at this time at all. Her therapist told me that once classes get filled at Boces, they have to open another class. Is this true?
Does Boces Readiness Center have summer clases?

Re: Preschool eval at Boces in Bellmore
my son went to boces ECC in levittown for 2 years.
because boces is part of the NYS teaching system (or somthing like that) they have the ability to open more classes as there is a need for them. but as i was told by the principal at ECC, its not as easy as it sounds. there is a whole process to go through and they have to have enough kids waiting that they can guarantee will be in the specific class. they won't open a class for 1 kid. but they don't have te same limitations a private school has, which is given permission to have a certain number of kids, and that number can't change. so yes htey have the ability to open more classes if more are needed, but it takes time and effort, and it won't happen unless there are alot of kids waiting to get in. they also have to ave the room in the biulding for it. (boces ECC does have room between the 2 buildings)
as for summer, i don't know about crc, but in ECC, the school is full day, but summer is only half day. which allows them to keep more kis there, since they only use the 1 building with airconditioning. the other building is not used in the summer. there are definitel fewer kids in summer, and my ds got a summer placement there when he was booted from little village. so it is possible, but you might not get word until very late. be prepared to have other optons for the summer. we did not get the summer placement at barbara c wilson like we were trying for. but fdid get a fall placement there. (we took boces)

Re: Preschool eval at Boces in Bellmore
We went for an eval there.
The main "issue" with BOCES is that they do not do pullouts. OT and PT are "consult" only in the classroom. So if you need speech, OT or PT, you might have to fight with your school district to get at home services for those services.
They do indeed have a lot more openings than other schools and they can open more classes.
The main reason is that their location is VERY big. AND their 6/1/2 classes are really grouped of 2 classes of 6/1/2 in the same classroom. So they essentially have 12 kids in 1 classroom.
Little Village snobbed us. They flat out told me that they would not do a screening as they would have no room for DS. That people in PT had priority over me for a FT program. We were on Barbara C Wilson wait list too. And we started evals over 2 months ago.

Re: Preschool eval at Boces in Bellmore
is the wait list at BCW for the 8/1/2 & 10/1/2 classes as well?
i called BCW and they said they cant do anything until they get his packet.
little village has his packet but they have to wait for the "official" letter from the school before he can be screened.
we are looking into BOCES as well, and our school district already told us AJ will get speech at home should we go to one of their programs.
sorry to hijack your post Christina...

one thing to note. they do not offer pull out speech, but because of the collaborative classroom set up (2 classes in one room) they have 2 teachers in the room at all time. one teacher is certified special ed, the other is certified speech. therefor they do get speech services on a continual basis in the classroom all day. it was the main reason we chose boces ECC over barbar C wilson. my son needed worked with the pragmatic speech, the social stuff... his words were clear and he had a ton of them. but he couldn't have a conversation with someone. 2 years in that setting with lots of kids as peer models and the constant speech work all day made a huge difference. he was full discharged before he went to kindergarten. its just a different type of speech service.
it is true that they don't offer PT or OT directly in school. that would still need to be provided outside of Boces.

Little Village told me flat out there was no room for Emma for full time. I asked if she could be put on a waiting list and they said all the kids there already have priority!

We were looking for September placement for DS. Registered him in December. We had our CPSE meeting early Feb. I was told I was "early".
CPSE recommendation: FT preschool with a 6/1/2 ration.
This is my experience.
- Little Village: Flat out being told that they did not even have room for him so they would not even screen him. Some people were willing to take PT last year so those kids have priority.
- Variety: Went for tour. Everything was waiting list. They never called me back for a screening or put me on the waiting list.
- BOCES (Children Readiness Center in Bellmore): Tour in January (before CPSE meeting). Had to wait 1+ month to get screening after they got letter from district. Had opening in 6/1/2 ration class. Got an acceptance letter for September.
- Barbara C Willson: Went for a tour with them in January (before CPSE meeting). Told they already had packets. Also had to wait 1+ month to get a screening after the district sent report from CPSE meeting/recommendations. Was told that that 6/1/2 was already completely filled up. That they only had 1 opening. That DS really should be in 8/1/2 (yeah... she was trying to sell me on her current inventory not was DS needed). Told there was a waiting list on that class anyway (8/1/2 ratio). Asked to call 2 days later. Told he was still on waiting list. Got nowhere!
AHRC (formally Nassau Austism Center): Only 3 spots for his age group open this year. This is only 1 class of 6 kids. Was accepted in program and got acceptance letter.
TWO WORDS: IT $UCKS!
I was told by many that we were early in the process and not to worry but in reality a lot of schools take kids from their PT programs and put them in the FT program so those of us looking for FT program are already out before we even get in the door. There are not many spots for FT in the 1st place. A lot of openings are for PT programs.
