NYC Teachers...Tenure Question...

Hi! I taught in NYC Special ed for a year, now I am teaching under my general ed license for a year. Would I be eligible for tenure next year? Or does it need to be 3 years in general or special ed? TIA

I think it is 3 years from your date of appointment regardless of the gen/spec thing...ask your rep thoughChat Icon

Re: NYC Teachers...Tenure Question...

I am almost 99 percent positive you need to get tenure for 3 years in specialization. say if you had tenure then wanted to move to another area, you would only need 2 years!

It is 3 years in one license area. If you switch you lose your tenure in that area... but could always revert back to it.

Yes you loose it. I did the same thing, so you keep your salary steps from when you began however restart your tenure.

Although, a girl I work with said she heard if your Principal were to contact some department (not sure what) or write a letter, you could keep your year towards tenure- not sure about this but I know my Principal does not do this...and if we were to ask, she'd say no.

Re: NYC Teachers...Tenure Question...

you dont "loose it" it just doesnt carry to the new license. If you go back to the other, you will still have tenure in that one.

A friend of mine did this and she only needed to do an additional 2 years for her Sp. Ed license. Not the full 3 she put did for her Gen Ed License

Re: NYC Teachers...Tenure Question...

Wait...were you teaching under a SpEd license? Or were you working in under a shortage area situation?

I worked 2 years in SpEd at my school with only a math license. My 3rd year I was moved permanently to the math dept. I received tenure my 3rd year.

If you weren't working under a SpEd license, I think you're okay as far as getting tenure 3rd year.
