So, what did everyone think of the NYS ELA tests today?

How did you ladies feel?

I thought Day 1 for grade 6 was pretty fair too. I read that they were going to raise the numbers needed for each level (so a score that would have gotten you a 3 last year may only get you a 2) so I am glad that they didn't make it a double whammy and increase the difficulty of the test. Let's hope today is similar!

I thought they would have been fair to give to children in general education, but when you teach the population of children I teach (special education) in a psychiatric day treatment center most of whom have severe learning disabilities and perform 2-3 grade levels below their chronological age, I'd say it was borderline nightmarish, sad and plain cruel to have to administer. Hands down the part of my job I hate the most.

Thanks GWB. No child left behind? How about a President I'd like to leave behind?

Chat Icon I teach special ed too .. Fortunately overall for my specific kids, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! Of course though for my kids who are comparatively lower functioning, it was much more a challenge Chat Icon

In 7th grade they gave a grammar section where they need to do editing. I don't even want to think about that portion Chat Icon I KNOW it was a wash.....

Hopefully the multiple choice from yesterday will give them the boost they need to still perform well because the grammar and listening section today, stunk!

It is absurd to me that kids who have those kind of needs have to take that test.

i thought the 3rd grade test was fair. didn't like the listening section with its similar sounding animal names. with a high esl population i thought it was needlessly confusing.

I fully and completely agree. One of kids practically got gave up because it was just too hard for her. I had another one having a major ADHD episode because she can't sit for that long (they get time and a half). And another asking me how to spell "that" and I had to say "do your best. sound it out"

I bought them donuts for the last day to reward them for trying so hard. It's not easy for them, and the only thing it does it get them so frustrated.
