Bedwetting? Pedatric Urologist?

My DD will be 6 in July and she still wears a Pull Up to bed. And it's not even for "accidents", she might as well be wearing an overnight diaper bc she basically pees like an infant at night. I feel bad bc she is only wearing a Pull Up bc what almost 6 yr old want to lay down for a diaper? But now I am changing her sheets and mattress cover a lot - I have to go back to diapers. Thank God for the plastic zip up waterproof cover I have under the quilted mattress pad. I don't think there is anything to do because she's asleep, it's not like she can help it. I"m thinking I need a pediatric urologist at this point. Any experience with this and a ped urol recommendation? Is this even considered bedwetting if they basically never night trained and are never dry in the AM? At her 5 yr old visit, Dr said they don't suggest checking it out until 6 yrs so I figure I will get in front of it now. And on a selfish note, she has a loft bed now and it's a damn PITA to change this bed more than it would normally need it!

We used Dr Robert Wasnick when we had an issue with Damien circ. He came highly recommended by a few girls on here. He is in Suffolk but I think he has an office in Mineola too. Here is his # 631-444-6270. Good LuckChat Icon

First, I will say that I think its perfectly "normal" at this stage. It's neurological, their brains just haven't fully matured in that aspect (I just read a great article on it, I can see if I can find it and forward to you). Some children don't stop until they are closer to 9. Both my children trained early. We go through periods of bedding wetting with A, who is also 6, but have never had one single wet bed from L, who is 4 and trained for more than a year.

And when A wets the bed, he is in underwear, and will sleep the whole night in it. Doesn't wake up when he wets. Happens maybe once a week, and we haven't been able to notice any pattern to it. He has gone months with no wetting, then all of a sudden, it happens again.

We took A to see a pediatric urologist for another issue, but we saw Dr. Brock and Palmer over in Lake Success. I can find their info if you want.

Second, I hear you on changing the loft bed! OMG! I curse so much when I have to do it, especially since one corner is up against a wall and I have to get on the bed to get the sheets in that corner.

My son is 6 1/2 and has done this too throughout the years. What has worked for us lately is getting him up when we go to bed (10pm-12am). Sometimes he does wet a little, not enough to wet through the sheets to the mattress cover though.

I dealt with this ,with Jade and Lea ! Jade was 9 and Lea was 5 and they were both wetting the bed ( both deep sleepers). What I did was, after they went to bed I woke them up every 3 hrs ! It was a pain in the arse, but by the end of the week ...that was it ! I was also ready to bring them to the urologist ~

I think the diaper/pull-up may be a crutch. I can understand why you're still using it, but she may surprise you if you take it away. Ella was never one of those kids that woke up dry, until we stopped using "nighttime panties" aka: pull ups.

Also, I would take her to the bathroom through the night, or at the very least before you go to bed.

I still do this often with Ella - before I go to bed (a few hours after she did), I'll put her on the potty. She pretty much sleeps through it, but 95% of the time, she goes. I'd much rather than than a wet bed and/or her waking me up in the middle of the night to go.

I have to add that I have tried waking A up when I got to bed (usually between 11 and midnight) and he is so DEAD asleep it's impossible to wake him. Plus, he's in a loft bed and I am not about to get him down the ladder while he is a zombie! Chat Icon I assume his dead-like sleeping is part of the reason he has an accident here and there.

I have no advise regarding the bed wetting but Joey needed a pediatric urologist and we saw Dr Gitlin. He was great, he was recommended to me from a few people on this site as well as my ped.

Re: Bedwetting? Pedatric Urologist?

Thank you for the names & suggestions. We have tried pretty much everything mentioned. I could try it all again bc it has been a few months but we currently limit drinks a few hours before & make her go before bed. I haven't been getting her up lately but I could retry (yes, Trish total PITA with loft but she will wake if I try to get her up). I don't think she will surprise me though bc we tried no pull up 2 months ago and she was wet for 3 nights and after the 3rd round of bedding washing, I gave up. She does seem to have a small bladder though bc even during the day, she is a pee-er. One of her family nicknames is "Tiny Tanks". My older son didn't night train right away, he was wearing a pull up until at least 4 1/2. We would get him up in the night and he would pee and when we stopped getting him up, he slept through without ever getting up. He's a very heavy sleeper and still never gets up in the night. Luckily, my 4 yr old night trained right away and never once had an accident.

I have to disagree here. THe pull ups are NOT a "crutch". For some kids, MAYBE, but for most true bed-wetters, pull ups are a godsend.

We have tried taking my son out of Pull ups. We take him out, and he is SOAKED each and every single morning. He will sleep SOUNDLY in a sopping wet bed. By the time the morning comes, the entire room stinks. We have woken him up several times throughout the night to make him go to the bathroom, we tried a "Bed Wetting Alarm" to no avail. He slept right through it.

I too change sheets several times a night sometimes. Its insane. My DS is almost 7 and our next step is to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) and a urologist.

To the OP, Chat Icon I know how you feel.

My niece is 6 1/2 and is a bed wetter too. I think the dr told my sister to just wait it out for now. As well as the above suggestions of waking her up every 3-4 hours at night.

I wanted to mention that they do make night underpants for older kids that absorb more and are larger then a normal pull up , to minimize the accidents and sheet washings....

Re: Bedwetting? Pedatric Urologist?

I'm so glad to see this post. Not because I'm happy anyone is dealing with this, but because I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my daughter and I'm terrible upset over her bedwetting. She's been trained during the day since before she was two, but she still can BARELY make it a few nights without wetting the bed. Reading this thread has really made me feel so much better than she's not the only one! She's just SUCH a deep sleeper. I've been taking her to the bathroom a couple of times a night and she never even wakes up, not so much as an acknowledgement that she's even out of bed! So I guess that's what it is and she's not ready. But she literally has a full bladder every, single time I take her to the bathroom, she just never wakes up. We were still using the underjams up until last week when we just couldn't take it anymore, thinking that she must be using them as a crutch, but the more I wake her, the more I realize she just can't do it yet. I mean, she's been pretty good with us taking her, but at 9 months pregnant with a newborn on the way, I just cannot see having to wake for both kids in the middle of the night. Sigh....
Anyway, I'm glad to see this thread, it's making me feel a little bit better that my almost 4 year old isn't able to hold it all nightChat Icon
