Seriously, we live in Bergen County...Elmwood Park. There are a few houses on our block for sale (but they look like they need some work). I don't really talk to the neighbors, but my DH does....he's more outgoing than I am. My step-daughter goes to school right around the corner and there are kids that she plays with in the neighborhood. As for prices in our area...I know that the 2 houses on our block, one was listed at $399K and one was listed at 499K. So, it varies. FM me if you have any questions.

Hi - We live in Essex County - South Orange. We moved here just before our wedding, and have been in the house now for about 8 months. I love the area. South Orange is a little pricey - for example - two houses on my block just went on the market for over 900k! 
West Orange is a little less expensive, I don't know the prices really. And Maplewood which is also next to S. Orange is a really cute town. The only problem with Essex County is sometimes you have to be careful about the taxes. Especially the towns that border Newark, Orange, East Orange, Irvington, etc.... Our taxes are just obscene!

how funny - i work in Maplewood on Valley St come visit me!!!
We don't really want to live in Essex, though....we like the central area of NJ...i should edit my first post. We like the open-ness of central NJ...Northern - which is very nice - just seems too crowded for us..

We live in Essex county as well. West Orange. I live ina semi-attached Town House (3 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bath, 3500 square feet). I live in one of the more "upscale" townhouse communities and prices are in the 600+ range.
Taxes in Essex are a FORTUNE! but we are centrally located to everything. DH and I both commute to lower manhattan and it takes us both under an hour each way. We take the PATH train (can't beat $1.20 each way!) to the WTC and walk from there.

That's the only thing I don't love about where we are...it's not as sub-urban as I would like. We drove around on Saturday and DH took me up to places like Ringwood which I think is Passaic County and it was so open and seemed so much more sub-urban. DH would like to move up that way, but we'll have to see what happens...I would love to move back to LI to be near my family, but any move we make is going to be costly if we insist on staying in the NY metro area.

we live in Union County, so far so good!
the places we looked were Summit, Chatham, Madison, New Providence, Berkely Heights and Westfield. The housing prices range greatly, but we found that the desirable "starter homes" (they are really no bigger than a shoebox) go for no less than 500K. New Providence and Berkely Heights are more affordable areas and where we ultimately decided to settle...

We just bought a house in Freehold, NJ (Monmouth County) which is pretty much as Central NJ as you get. Were also looking at Metuchen & Aberdeen/Matawan. Definitely, as you would expect, you get more for your money the further south you go.
In Metuchen, 3 bd houses were going for low to mid 400's, but the ones in the low 400's needed much work. Taxes were quite expensive though, usually around 7K. Aberdeen/Matawan was pretty much the same story as Metuchen except you get more property. In Freehold, we were able to get a 4bd updated house in great condition for high 300's. Taxes are a much more reasonable 5K.

Aberdeen/Matawan are right near the water, only about 10 minute drive to beaches like Keansburg. Freehold is a little more inland about 30 minutes away from the Point Pleasant or Belmar.

I just moved to the Jackson area from Aberdeen.... it was ok - but slowly becoming more and more congested.
We sold our 3 bedroom Levitt (yes, the area is mostly Levitt homes) house in January. Our taxes were high at 7100 per year. The school system is not that great. Also, as I mentioned in the other post - Sprint is planning on erecting a cell tower right in the middle of the I-section. Points to consider.

I live in Springfield and while it's still kinda north it's not that far up there. And I like it because it borders Westfield, Summit and Millburn and you don't pay those kind of prices. I would say a 3-4 bedroom house can go anywhere from $400-$600,000 and up. YOu know we're close to Maplewood (I commute from there) so that's good for you job.
My DH's family builds houses in the Hazlet, Aberdeen area and while there is more land down there, it's slowly becoming built upon and it's very crowded. The Manalapan, Marlboro area is in central Jersey and very nice, but Route 9 is PACKED and it's pretty expensive.

I haven't been investigating Central NJ, but I grew up there, so I can throw a few towns out there.
Metuchen is nice, so is Colonia/Edison, though it's very congested. You can also consider Greenbrook, Middlesex, Raritan and Somerville, though if you plan to have children, check out the schools. I don't think they are that highly rated, though I could be wrong.
If money is not a problem, Bridgewater is very nice and had good schools. I can say the same for Highland Park. Also, Princeton is lovely, and so are some of the surrounding suburbs such as Griggstown.

Bridgewater is nice we have friends there (DH works there). We would have considered looking there for a house, but it was too far for where I work, and we enjoy going to the city alot (we're there every weekend), and it's not that convienent to NYC. Highland Park is decent too but VERY close to Rutgers University, not sure if being in a "college town" would be a problem. DH just sold his condo there. Edison, I agree is very congested

We're in South Brunswick, which I like and is not that crowded. I've looked into a lot of towns that are near the train lines since DH works in NYC. Someone mentioned the Marlboro, Manalapan, Freehold area, which is very nice, but most people who live there and work in NYC take the bus to work, which my DH doesn't want to do.

I recently moved to Bloomfield. The northern part is great...the Brookdale and Oakview sections have EXCELLENT elementary schools. It is right off route 3 which is nice (like 25 minutes drive to the city no traffic) and there are express buses that go in. Downtown bloomfield is getting better all the time..they are doing a lot of redevelopment and there is a train to NYC from there. Really convenient to garden State...really close to Montclair which is great for shopping and restaurants (really trendy cityish kinda feel) and there are a ton of parks around. If you have any other questions let me know. In the better sections I mentioned above prices range from $399-$500

DH and I just bought a 3 BR, 3.5 Bath townhouse in Springfield and we love the location and accessibility to the city. The houses in our development are going for generally 500+.
