This makes me so happy.....
My daughter is 16 and in the 10th grade. She attends the Life Skills Program in High School and also attends Wilson Tech for vocational training. She has Mosaic Down Syndrome and is classified as Autistic on her IEP.
She is, on most accounts, a typical 16 year old. Likes the same things that other 16 year olds like etc.
The program that she is in has been a GOD SEND...I cant even begin to express what it has done for her. When she was simply contained to her school district she was a little limited with the amount of friends she could have. Because she is so "middle of the road" developmentally she often lacked a lot of friends.
As a parent we just want our children to be happy...and she is for the most part. But I feel bad for her that she misses out on some of the typical teenage stuff...The girlfriend type stuff..the bff stuff...hanging out at the mall...talking about boys...trying on make up etc...
Well....
There is a boy at Wilson Tech who likes Ariel. According to her they arent boyfriend and girlfriend yet but he likes her and she likes him. Of course I have my concerns...what mom wouldnt. But he's been calling her and they have been talking on the phone etc. To just see her face beam when calls is worth all the concerns in the world. To have her have this little thing of teenagehood just brings tears to my eyes.

aaawww.. That little "normalcy" is something parent of Special Needs children love to appreciate.
Good for her! You must be so proud of her progress!

That is so sweet
I worked in a special ed school for 14-21 year olds and 2 of the graduating students went on to get engaged  It was so sweet! They would hold hands in school and hang out at the school dances. Their parents were planning an engagement party for them also!

That is great. Last year (or was that 2 years ago now?  ) you had said that you believe that the plan for her for high school was going to work out great. So, you had a good instinct b/c it sounds like it's all working--not just the thing with the boy .

I love it!! I have goosebumps just reading this. All you really want as a parent (of any child) is for them to be where they belong and be comfortable in their own skin. It sounds like your DD is in a great place. God Bless!
