I live in Carle Place and there were reports that a tornado touched down here, too. So scary!!! There are trees down everywhere!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
I was in Bethpage and it seemed like a tornado was nearby with the wind and amount of downed trees.

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
Yep! I was OUTSIDE on a train platform during the storm (heavy rain, high winds, thunder, lightning, and HAIL ). Completely and totally insane. Damage all over town. I haven't heard about the schools yet, officially - but waiting to hear!
I attached a pic I took in Grace Ave Park after the storm. A HUGE tree completely uprooted!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
OMG, it was crazy out there today... We had my company's picnic and right in the middle, without any warning (no clouds, nothing, it was still bright sun), it torrential rained and tree branches were coming down all over.... We ran to the car and within 10 minutes, it was over and the sun was shining like nothing happened. IT was so fast and quick!

I was on Northern Blvd in Great Neck today and lots of the lights were out. It took forever to get to Michael's from Macy's!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
I just came home from a biz trip to Wisconsin where there were tornado watches every night. Nothing happened except for bad thunderstorms and my hotel lost TV since it had satellite.
Tonight I get home from LGA and all of Middle Neck Rd. is dark, the police are all over directing traffic, and many apartments don't have electricity.
Luckily, we have electricity on our street. That is some photo of the park. I live right around the corner!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
My best friend lives and works in Great Neck. She calls me and tells me her office has no power and that she thinks its the end of the world outside...I'm like WHAT? I'm staring out the window and its sunny and fine.
Then water was coming INTO their office, like under the doors, and the FD came to get people out of the elevators because they were stuck.
Finally they evacuated the whole office and she went home only to find a transformer on fire on her block!
My brother works for the TONH and they called him in and told him to expect to work for the next 24 hours.

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
I live in GN also (actually across from the park with the pic above) and it is pretty bad here, it looks like a war zone. I don't have full power yet, some lights work but no ac and no power in my kitchen so I will be tossing everything in my freezer today....does anyone know if the LIRR has resumed service on the port washington branch?

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
I have a client on Barstow Road and a tree crushed one of their cars, they lost power and possibly some computers were damaged. I spoke to them around 4:00, they were really shaken. Really scary stuff!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
Yes, it's true. My DH and I were caught in the middle of it. Golf ball sized hail was coming down. We were stuck in our car -- it was really scary. There was no power, trees came crashing down, and all the traffic lights were out.
I hope no one was hurt. It was REALLY scary.

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
It took me 3 hours to get from E Setauket to Garden City. 2 1/2 of those hours were spent on the LIE between exits 40-39.
When I was on IU Willets path I did see a ton of down trees and power lines.

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
i work in great neck and it was pretty scary how it went from sunny to we could not even see out the window the rain was falling so hard and so much. the electricity went out in the building and we all evacuated. it was scary driving b/c all the trees were down and shrubs and leaves everywhere, yet the sun was shinning. Today i am actually home b/c there is still no electricity at my office! i feel bad for all the people that live in great neck and have no electricity in this hot weather!!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
Looking at the pictures on News12 I am amazed at how quick the storm was and the damage that it left. In Lindenhurst we had hail about 3/8" big. My nieces and nephews were amazed by it.

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
I saw cars with trees on top of them still over the weekend. My parents have uprooted trees in their yards. The town came through over the weekend and removed trees from their street. My mom said she had never seen anything like it, and here in westen Suffolk, we had next to nothing!

Re: Tornado in Great Neck
Just an FYI: It was not a tornado. It was straight line winds.
What is the difference? A tornado is spinning craziness of winds. Straight line winds are crazy winds in a straight line. (Can you tell meteorologists have no imagination is naming these things? )
Bridgeport, CT had a tornado. LI had straight line winds.
There is also another wind event that can do a crapload of damage: Microburst. These are tough to forecast. The way you can look at them is it is like God sneezed straight down. They are extremely powerful gusts of winds that typically come straight down from the sky.
All are mistaken for a tornado by the damage they leave.
