Georgie and Hunter's Arrival: 5/25/10
On Monday, May 24, I went to LIJ for bi-weekly monitoring of the babies. Baby A’s fluid levels had been low for awhile so I knew it was a matter of time until they admitted me. I was 36 weeks that day. I brought DH and my parents w/ me bc I had a feeling that my time had run out and I would be admitted that day. I was right----but of course, I didn’t bring a camera or my hospital bag. The dr told me they would deliver me immediately. I kind of freaked out a bit. Then they found out that I had breakfast that morning so they decided to deliver the babies on Tuesday morning. I spent the night in the hospital. The C/S was scheduled for 11:30am on Tuesday morning. At 6:30am, the nurse came in and told me that I was bumped up and would be a mom in an hour. Holy cow----I called Dh and told him to race to the hospital. DH told me that he was burning up with fever. I was so afraid that they wouldn’t let him in the operating room. He popped 4 tylenol and hopped in the car. His fever was a lot better by the time he got there so he got to come in w/ me.
Honestly, the C/S was easy for me. I was really worried. I got in there at 8:15. The spinal wasn’t bad at all---I barely felt it. I felt like they were touching my upper stomach and thought maybe they cut the wrong area…LOL. Next thing I knew, I hear, “It’s a boy.” It felt like 30 minutes later, I hear them say, “Another boy.” I later found out that was only 2 minutes later. I think we all knew I was having 2 boys even though we didn’t find out ahead of time. They put the boys over the sheet and they were so cute but soooo tiny. I loved hearing the dr say Happy B-Day to them! Then they wheeled the boys out and Dh went w/ them. I felt like I was there for hours as they closed me up but it was only about 20 minutes. The c/s didn’t hurt. I just got really cold and my arms were shaking a lot. I did feel some weird pain in my shoulders but it was tolerable. DH cried when they boys came out. I def cried a bit, but really was so in shock that I was a mom, it was surreal. I was in the recovery room for about an hour and then went up to the room.
Georgie had to go to the NICU for a few hours so I got to hold Hunter first. Then they brought Georgie to me and I got to hold them both. It was the greatest feeling EVER. The next morning, I got up and walked around. I was desperate to take a shower but they wouldn’t let me. They gave me an awesome sponge bath. On Thursday, I felt great. Took a shower and felt even better.
I was ready to go home on Friday but they boys weren’t quite ready. Being preemies, the hospital made them take a Car Seat Test. (Basically they dit in their car seat for 1 hr and then the nurse checks their oxygen levels.) Both boys failed on Friday. Georgie passed on Saturday but Hunter failed again. As Georgie and I were leaving the hospital, Hunter started having breathing problems (like, turning blue…scary) so he had to get rushed to the NICU. I sobbed the rest of the day. Leaving Hunter in the hospital was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. DH got me a bottle of wine and I drank the whole thing. Hunter finally came home on Wednesday.
Things have been great since I have been home. We have the boys on a schedule. More than anything, I luv the changes in DH. He went from a rough-around-the-edges construction worker to someone who walks around the house singing and smiling all day. He is an amazing dad (although he is a BIT overprotective!).
I am still bleeding a lot from the C/S but am not in any pain. I NEVER knew that u would bleed vaginally for 6 weeks after a C/S!!!!! That was a surprise.
Fortunately, I've been able to work from home part-time, so at least we won't be completely broke----formula and diapers are sooo expensive.
A few things I learned:
If u can afford a private room (even if it means selling one of your limbs to do so)….go for it. I had 3 different roommates. 1 was normal and sweet. 1 was a filthy pig who kept peeing ALL over the bathroom floor. Sooo gross. She also snored VERY loudly and her 4 other children ran around the room constantly. The other one projectile vomited for about 24 hours. Nothing grosser than hearing someone puke only about 2 feet from your own bed.
If u r not planning on BF, bring sports bras to the hospital. Buy them a size smaller. One of the nurses suggested I do this. She told me to keep one on at all times and not to get my boobs wet at all when I take a shower. I did this and my milk never came in!!! I was very glad bc I heard it’s painful.
For the 1st week that we were home, we just used the Twist and Feed bottles that the hospital was using. (U can buy them at Buy Buy Baby.) It was so much easier to use them instead of having to measure formula----especially for the 1st week or so when u r still just adjusting to being a parent.
Things I couldn’t live without: Bouncy seats Receiving blankets----u can’t have enough of them Cheap bibs----no need for fancy ones when you’re doing a 3am feeding!----get as many as possible Pack-N-Play w/ Changing Area----we live in a cape style house and keep the P-n-P on the 1st floor to change the babies during the day. Onesies---no need for fancy outfits when your son(s) will pee through their clothes in a few hours . Some days we change their clothes 8-10 times each.
I am so, so lucky and blessed to have these beautiful babies!!!
