DOE- What happens if a student gets pregnant?

There was an 8th grader in my school who got pregnant during the school year. I'm wondering what's going to happen to her when she starts HS in the fall. In the DOE, are you allowed to attend school while pregnant, or will she be forced to attend an alternative school for pregnant teens? Chat Icon Such a sad situation.. she's so young Chat Icon

Yes, they are allowed to attend class pregnant. They can even return right after giving birth, no drs clearance or anything!

Each year I've had at least two pregnant students. So very sad. They always have been able to stay until the end and then they come back.

There are NYC HS's have the "Lyfe Program" which is nursery within the school where mothers can drop their babies in the morning and pick them up at the end of their school say.

Also there is a discharge code that is used for maternity leave ( I believe it is 40 school days) and then the mother needs to return to school.

here is the link for Lyfe programs:

Yes, they can go to class pg. There are no "pg schools" anymore. They may need a doctor's note for PE outlining what the student can and cannot do. I think they get six weeks "maternity leave" in which they're eligible for home instruction. After that, they need to find child care. My building has a LYFE center, so my students will typically drop their babies off in the daycare and come to class. I wish they would let teachers do the same thing!!

I was just going to say this...they have better maternity leave than teachers do. Also, when they leave to have the baby, (this happens a lot in my over-crowded school) we have to hold their spot in the class. We're not allowed to give another student their schedule. No matter how long the girl is out.

One of my former students visited me a couple weeks ago. She's now in 10th grade and her daughter goes to school with her. Her HS has a daycare, which I imagine isn't uncommon in NYC.

Wow ladies, thanks for all the info! I had no idea about any of this!! I just find it so sad that teen pregnancy is such a broad issue that they need to set up these programs Chat Icon It just hits home because being pregnant now and teaching middle school students, I can't imagine being that age and being pregnant!

Interesting though that some schools have a daycare.. I wonder if the teachers who work in those schools are allowed to use it too- probably not- which really is so typical of the DOE Chat Icon
