Buying out in the Island

Hello every1: DH and I are thinking of starting to become homeowners. We currently live in brooklyn and don't think there's any chance we could afford a decent house out here. We both work in the city and my parents live in Brooklyn so I think it's best if we don't go too far out. We don't have any children, but hoepfully will someday. What towns do you guys recommend? Where do I even begin looking?

What are you looking for? A house with land? Close to the water? On a train line? Do you need a city feel?

If you can live without a basement.... Levittown offers some great value in houses along with proximity to the city.

Channel 12 news today stated that Suffolk county is the second highest city for Ozone pollution. I love out east too!

About 500-600k. Would like a house 2-3 bedrooms 1-2 bathrooms. I guess never gave much thought to a basement since I don't have one, but it couldn't hurt.

Since you'd like to stay close to Brooklyn, maybe look into Western Nassau County. I live in Franklin Square and love it, there's West Hempstead, Malverne, Rockville Centre, etc. The homes are in your price range too.
Good luck and happy house hunting!Chat Icon

I agree..I would love to live in Rockville Center...some beautiful fieldstone capes. It was just out of our reach at the time. Now I don't want to move..I'm just lazy..don't want to pack and unpack ever again!!!

You could live in Lynbrook--it's minutes from JFK and the commute I hear is excellent on the LIRR.

Lynbrook, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, New Hyde Park are all good areas that are not too far from the city.

They also said the Nassua was NOT tested. Probably the same air.

You could also try looking in Garden City, Bethpage, Bellmore. Great Neck or Manhasset, too, but those areas are very expensive and I don't know what's there in the 500/600K price range. Good luck house hunting!

Re: Buying out in the Island

Hi there...i know exactly how you are feeling..we were living in Long Island City Queens and about a year ago we decided we were ready to buy something and defintly could not afford our area so we knew we wanted to do Nassau based on commute but we were not familiar with areas at all. What we did for a about a month was just pick a few towns all over nassau and explore on the weekends...go to open houses if we saw signs but pretty much just explore, try to get a feel for the areas. once we had it more narrowed down to a few different towns, we met with a few relators and they showed us some things as well as gave us a much more detailed tour of the area we were...we were actually pleasantly surprised at how much time they took with the tour..In the end we really fell in love with the sea cliff area and we found a realtor who actually was a friend of family and worked with him for 2 months seeing a ton of properties until we finally found our home! So my best advice is to just have fun and explore for a little while..there are really so many great towns on long island you just have to find the one that feels like "home" to you! Best of Luck

Re: Buying out in the Island

Thanks every1 for all your advice. We looked at a few homes in East Meadows and one in Levittown. I loved the one in Levittown and are seriously considering it.
