PSA: PUFFS!
Not sure if this has happened to anyone else but TWO times recently, Loey has started choking on puffs.
At first we were giving them to him whole and he was doing fine! Then one day, he started choking. I had to scoop the puff out of his throat (I know that's not the first thing I should have done, but in the moment... I was alone and that's what I did!) After that, we started breaking them in half again. Well last night, he started choking on half of one while we were eating dinner. It was so scary! His face started to turn red and Steve had to give him the baby heimlich. I also scooped it out again.
We realized that the puffs were a bit stale. The package says to use them within like 3-5 days or something like that... and he definitely doesn't finish a container that quickly.
Since they were stale, they were chewier and did not dissolve in his mouth which (we think) is why he started to choke on them.
Just wanted to put this out there!!! Use the package within a few days or throw it out! It was SO scary and we had no idea he could choke on these "melt in your mouth" puffs!

So scary....
I know too, some babies and kids are just more prone to choking. Cailen is like that - I'm sure he choked a few times on puffs.... Actually, I didn't feel comfortable giving him any food not cut up until he was 2.5 to almost 3 - he choked on almost anything!!!

I have heard that too! That's exactly why we don't give him any (now my SIL giving them to him is another story! )

Re: PSA: PUFFS!
They are REALLY chewy when they go stale. I noticed that and avoid giving them when they do.
The teething biscuits scare the crap out of me. My son bit off a big piece soooo many times. I wont give them to the twins.
But like liza mentioned, some kids are definetly more prone to choking, Noah was and is this way, and feeding the babies now is like a whole different ballgame. They are nothing like that, they seem to understand how to clear their throats to get the food back up if its too large.

Re: PSA: PUFFS!
so scary! I just threw out a 1/2 container last night because I ate one and realized that they were stale. And as for teething buscuits, I'm never giving them to DS again! Lat week I gave him one and he broke a quarter size piece off along with 2 smaller pieces. I had to scoop them out of his mouth and it scared the heck out of me.

So scary! Glad he's okay!!!
I noticed they get stale QUICK and end up throwing out half the tube... esp the happy bellies ones. I haven't bought them in a while, she doesn't "snack" much... but the gerber cheese puffs stay good a lot longer.

Re: PSA: PUFFS!
Good PSA! I noticed that with Joeys Puffs too.
I'm DEATHLY afraid of the teething biscuits. But I'm afraid of table foods in general! (I need to get better at this though, I don't want him afraid of food)

This is why my ped told us not to give the girls teething biscuits - he says that they are choking hazards and he has had several kids choke on them.

Re: PSA: PUFFS!
I find it depends on the brand too. Aaron can eat the Target ones whole with no problem, but he chokes/gags on the whole ones from Gerber. I have to break them in half.
