Over Treater
I am such an over treater...
my Martin asks...for the most part i give...
I have to stop.
SO this is my question:
When do you primarily give your dog treats?

Re: Over Treater
I usually only give Molly treats when she poops. I give her carrots when I am leaving the house so that will distract her (But I don't think that's considered a treat)
Tanaholic on the other hand is DEF. an over treater. Nat - why don't you tell us how many treats you give Ms. Lola a day.

Re: Over Treater
I excessively give treats out of guilt. If we're leaving the house for the day this gets 1 or 2 treats before we leave and when we come home. If Bruno didn't puke in the car on a long trip, this can get 3 or 4 treats (over the course of the night). If he motions his head towards the tear jar as if to say "hey I haven't gotten a treat in a while", he gets one. I know my guilt is in my head but I feel much better after I give him them.

Re: Over Treater
We really only give Lacie treats after a walk. Once is a while if she was good for something else, she will get one but not too often.
I have never met a dog that doesn't love food. We have to beg her to eat her food all the time and sometimes she doesn't even eat the treat we give her. She would much rather just play.

Re: Over Treater
I try to mix up the treats- carrots, ice cubes, dog biscuits, bones. She gets unlimited ice cubes, carrots when she pees or poops and biscuits when I leave her or it she does something really special.. like barks to go outside. I also give her broccoli sometimes.

Re: Over Treater
When they've completed their "business" outside. And we give them restricted calorie Eukanuba biscuits. We also don't give them a whole busicuit, we break them in half.

Re: Over Treater
I am such an over treater. All my dogs have to do is look at me and I'll get up and get them a treat. My pooches are spoiled rotten.

Re: Over Treater
I give my girl a treat when I leave the house and after she eats her dinner. Then sometimes when DH is not looking, I will sneak her an extra treat, or two. I am 1/2 italian, love = treats.

Re: Over Treater
I usually only give him treats after doing his business outside and when I'm "attempting" to train him...
Dh on the other hand likes to over feed/treat him and wonders why he's starting to get a belly

Re: Over Treater
My two get a treat when I leave the house for work or if I'm going out for a while somewhere in the evening, etc..
But I give them Iams Weight Control Adult Biscuits which are on the tiny side for my size dogs (1 black lab @ 58lbs, another black lab @ 90lbs)
We watch their weight/diet pretty closely.

Re: Over Treater
I never realized that there are sooo many other over treaters..
i too give the two treat when i leave in the morning.. I give him two when i get home
WHen he does his poopies...he gets a treat..
but lately...he has been asking for many more in between...
AND DEF knows how to play the sad eyes to get it...
I have even caught him purposefully asking to go out in the back, acting like he has to poop, to run back a minute later to get the treat...
I think i am going to go for the healthy alternatives...
thanks

Re: Over Treater
I dont overtreat because the ingredients in treats is not good for tiny tummies. I buy Gerber Baby Meat sticks, and those are their treats.
