Childfree Communities...
The quiet life in a child-free village

My mother lives in the Tampa/Clearwater area where there are quite a few deeded properties that prohibits children under a certain age to be permanent residents. They are mostly condos, but there are some with townhouses and regular single family homes. They aren't segregated in their own town but there are a few very large developments.

Great link! How about one closer to home:
The Villages, Florida
My parents have a winter house there, we visit them every spring. Rusty and I want to buy a house there but we're not allowed yet, we're too young. 
Seriously though, it's definitely a consideration for us. It is SO senior friendly, golf cart friendly, they have a ton of activities and clubs, their town centers are beautiful. Nothing is outdated or cheesy. And when you're at the point where you can't care for a home yourself, there is a center for you where your needs can be met, and you can still enjoy the Villages.
It's outstanding.

You know, I don't know if I would want to live in a community without children - certainly not at this stage in my life. Though we won't be having any children of our own, I like being around people of all different ages, shapes, and sizes. My house is enough of a kid-free zone -- and soon we'll have many acres separating us from the neighbors anyway.
I like having all different types of families around, including kids. I love seeing kids outside playing - makes me happy.

I agree. While I can see the appeal of a childfree community, it's not for me.
Besides, where I live, the "city" is an unofficial childfree community, since most parents (especially those with younger children) wind up in the suburbs.

I don't think that's entirely accurate for every community. Senior housing that meets certain requirements is an exception to the Fair Housing Act's prohibition on discrimination on the basis of familial status. Additionally, people under 55 are not a protected class as defined by the FHA...

I agree. While I can see the appeal of a childfree community, it's not for me.
Me too. I live in a co-op , so I don't have that much separation form my neighbors & I like that the kids wander by when I am water the plants & stuff.
I do however, feel a little left out, b/c the younger people seem to be closer to the other ones with kids.
So a child free community might be nice, not to avoid kids, but to make friends with people who are in a similar life situation.

As for the OP, I'm with Kara. I like hearing the kids playing outside, seeing them ride bikes, etc. Reminds me that all hope is not lost due to the likes of PS3 and whatnot.

What I meant about the Villages was when we're that age, it would be nice to look into. The idea of buying now would be for a vacation home near my parents.
There are only three families with kids in our general vicinity, and we are friendly with them. I don't mind them or wish there were no kids around us. Honestly, the Mom of one family is louder than all of the kids are!
If anything, the worst of it are the teenagers across the street who hang out next to my house instead of their own and throw their empty cans into my backyard.
