question is subjective depending on use.
I just ordered a replacement battery as i had mine over a year...moderate to low use and after a few phone calls, web stuff... the phone will die.
i have a storm.

I have the BB Curve 8530. My battery usually lasts close to 2 days. I only charge it when it's drained and I only keep it on the charger for as long as it needs to charge.

roughly 2 days-ish depending on use..... the curve 8520.
i was having an issue for awhile (about 2 weeks) where it was dying in about 4-5 hours.... turned out i had a chat program running that i didnt know about that had caused an error and just keep trying to reconnect every 10 seconds....

I have the new Curve- the one without the roller ball- more of the touchpad
It lasts about 2 days- depending on my use.
It definitely lasts less than my old Pearl's battery.

I am always on it- part of my job
I was just about dead by 5pm yesterday
(no appointments- so no car charging)
today- slower day and I am at 65% battery at 12:20pm
left the house at 9am
will be charging in the car at 1:15pm while I drive to my appointment
I BBM all day, text and email

How do you know you have things running?
I just got my 1st BB and I feel like the battery dies pretty quickly... I charge it over night and I get a full day use out of it and the battery is dead by the time I go to bed.

Ok,I definitely email a lot and BBM here and there...rare text now.
So I guess it's just from use 
I thought BB had a pretty good battery life

I have the Blackberry Tour (9630) and my battery last a good long time. I can charge it and it will last 2 days and im always on it. I buy my batteries off ebay for like $5, better than paying $40

Curve 8330 and I know using vibrate kills the battery. I shut it off every night and charge it though so I've never had to use it to the complete end.

HOld down ALT and press the "return" key... it will scroll through all your open programs....there are the standard 5 (i think) that should always be open...
1. home screen
2. BBM
3. phone
4. messages
5. browser
anything other then those can/should be closed...
also, you want to pull the batter out for about 30 seconds at least once a week.. it will free up and locked memory and make your phone faster. remember there are computers now, not just phones anymore.

Mine goes 2-3 days (I have a Storm). I'm not a super heavy user, on days I use the internet a lot, it doesn't last as long. I've had my storm a little over a year now.

i have 3 email accounts, AIM, Yahoo chat, BBM and facebook always running... and the damn thing never shuts up... i still get 2 days out of it.... DW has the same phone, she gets about the same time.
you could always get a battery with extended life.... they are not any bigger then the regular battery and last up to 30-40% longer....

there is a way to have the bb check your emails less often if you want. that can help save your battery as well.
also depends on how many apps you switch back and forth to.

I have the tour. With me constantly being on it, I usually have 2 bars left after my work day.
Depending on what apps you have running/using, it goes faster. I dl the crunch sms texting thing and my battery died within about 4 hours bc I didn't shut it down. Also happned to me when I left another app running. I deleted the app and it went back to normal.

it's 3 weeks old!
