Re: What is???
I'm donating mine as long as the hospital will participate when I deliver.
It's basically like taking a mini insurance policy out that the baby or someone related to the baby will have a horrible disease that requires a transplant -- I think like bone marrow or something similar -- for which there is a very slim chance of finding a match for.
The cord blood is supposed to be a perfect match for the baby and a probably match for close relatives if it is needed in the future.
I understand it to be extremely expensive, but can be lifesaving, especially in families where certain diseases (I do not know which) are very common.
Sorry I don't have more information about it. I'm sure others on here can help more, or of course you can google it (despite google being the enemy).

Insurance definitely does not cover the actual banking.
My OB said that it'll be $300 to collect the cord blood at the time of delivery. I believe conditions have to be very good for them to be able to do it at all. No complications, I think. I don't know if they still charge the $300 if you're donating it. I was going to wait until the labor & delivery class I'm taking at the hospital to ask about it if it isn't otherwise covered.
A company sent me a bunch of information about it in the mail and then called me to follow up, but I didn't really read through it. Once we decided we weren't going to do it, I thought there was enough else to learn about pregnancy-wise so I didn't bother.

Cord banking is when you take the blood from the cord once the baby is born. The blood will be stored just in case your child has a disease in which they need a blood tranfusion or when they need a match for something.
DH and I went to listen to the benefits of cord banking (even though we knew we wanted to do it) and received a coupon for about 350 off. We went with Viacord. All hospitals participate. You need to sign up and then the company will send you the kit. You bring the kit to the hospital and then Dr. collects the blood. After the birth, you call and they send someone to pick up the kit. It cost about $2,000 to do it at first, but there is an annual storage fee.
Hope that helps!
