i'm 35, dh is 43. When I told people I didn't want kids when I was still in my 20s I ALWAYS got that response. Oh you're young, you'll change your mind when you meet the right guy!
Meanwhile I was looking for the right guy who felt the way I did!

We don't get this response much anymore; mostly b/c everyone we know knows how we feel by now and leave us alone Chat Icon

sorry it's kinda true.

I didn't want kids my whole life until 40.

But God gave me two step kids instead.

It's actually a good balance for me lol

I ask people if they want to see the scars from my husband's vasectomy. That usually shuts them up. Chat Icon

For you maybe, but it's NOT true for everyone. Millions of very happy childless by choice couples of all ages are proof.

ETA --- And regardless of what you may think is "true" or not, it's just plain RUDE for anyone to disrespect someone's choice by "poo-pooing" it and saying, "oh you'll change your mind."

I think it really depends on the person. I myself, have never had the "mommy" gene and I know that I will never want to give up my freedom to do what I want when I want.

I also think that as some people age they do begin to develop the want for children

I'm a mommy but I totally identify with those that are happy without having children or not wanting them.

I wasn't sure myself if I ever wanted one, but my first was a surprise and I warmed up to it.

But, I still feel like this is not a natural feeling for me....when I'm out and about, I feel more like an Aunt or something. I love my child of course, but I don't feel motherly.

To be able to focus soley on your marriage/relationship/career/self...to be able to travel at free will....come and go as you please....it's a luxury!

And for those that make it a reality, more power to them. I wish I had that back.

Re: Does age have anything to do with......

i think there is a big difference between not wanting them and not being ready. i didn't want them for awhile, and now i do. i want to wait a few years though since i'm not ready and want a few years of just me and my man before we have children, and he feels the same way.

i think a lot of people assume that they know you'll want kids eventually since that's what happened with them. i just laugh it off with women who say stuff like that. i used to try to debate them, but they assume so much they're right, i can't be bothered with defending my actions.

For some people, I think age does factor into their decision. Other people may always know, regardless of age, that kids are not for them.

I don't take offense at the idea that DH and I might change our minds as we get older. It's the all-knowing manner that perfect strangers will say it- like they know us better than we know ourselves, or that the lack or desire for children is due to youthful immaturity.

Maybe for some.

But certainly not for all - and not for me.

I looooove when people tell me that I'll change my mind about getting married again and kids. I laugh in their faces.

Re: Does age have anything to do with......

maybe..haha...but i am the opposite...ironically when i was in my early 20's i wanted them...then i saw the reality of having a child as all my friends got married and started families...and as I got older I realized it just wasn't for me...

I was not poo pooing at all. I just said that statement is KINDA true. Trust me, I AM ON YOUR side. You don't know how hard it is to be a childless StepMother..It's FAR worse than being plain ole childless! YOu don't fit in any group and can be very lonely at times.

I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the OP's post generally -- people who tell us "Oh you're young. You'll change your mind." That's disrespectful and rude. I stand by that.

And, honestly, I don't think being childless by choice is hard, nor am I trying to say it's worse than being anything else. I'm not trying to say "oh poor us. It's so hard. Nothing is worse." I'm saying comments like the one the OP is talking about are rude and disrespectful. They are.
