As long as the child can walk up and down the stairs safely and is potty trained I'm good with it. 3+ We have a split floor plan so the kids are on the other side of the house.

I would never feel comfortable with them downstairs by themselves (either too young, or worry about someone breaking in, or worry about them sneaking out!), but upstairs maybe 3 or 4+.

My kids were 17 & 11 when we moved into the house we own now. Our floor plan is unique, there are two bedrooms upstairs-our master & our exercise room & three downstairs. Teenagers like to stay up late & play video games on weekends so it made it really easy for them to get to the kitchen & basement family room without waking us up.
Our exercise room would make a perfect nursery for a future owner because I wouldn't want a baby that still might wake up at night on another floor. I be afraid I'd fall going up & down the stairs if I was tired.

I think if bad people are going to invade your house while you're sleeping, being upstairs inst going to save you.

I don't think I would ever feel comfortable sleeping on separate floors, but that's just me. I'm a worry wart. Chat Icon

I have no choice right now - if I had a baby, after it grew out of a bassinet it would be on the 1st floor and my master is on the second - it is the only room upstairs right now.
I am not comfortable with that - but the only thing is that the room is right next to my stairs - so I can be there is a second if need be

this was the one thing DH and I didn't like about capes, so we didn't try to buy one. we don't have kids yet, so we had no idea how we would feel about this. my biggest fear was a fire. I just couldn't buy one.

I don't have kids, but I grew up in a cape. My brother & I shared a bedrrom on the 1st floor and when my brother was 4 or 5 they moved him upstairs.

My my mom didn't want him to be alone, so they moved me into my own room too, wich I think is hilarious, because I was 2 or 3 and probably not much comfort or protection for my brother, but they just wanted everyone inthe same place I guess.

We have a split that has our master bedroom about 6 steps up from the other bedrooms..I hate it...We're hopefully moving soon, but can't stand that once we possibly put her in a regular bed she can walk right out and would have to walk up the stairs to our bedroom in case of something...

Re: what age would you feel comofortable having your kids bedroom on another floor from you say like in a cape?

our house has the master on the first floor and the other bedrooms are upstairs...

at first i was worried for when we have a baby and we were worried about the house not being "kid friendly" but after a lot of thinking i don't think there will be much of an issue. i figure we will get a good video monitor for when the baby starts sleeping upstairs alone and if i have to go up and down in the middle of the night at least i'll be getting exercise! we also have our family room up there so i can always crash on the couch if i had to..toddler age we'll have to get gates and that is the only stage where i would really be worried...

i do like having the bedrooms upstairs for when the kids are older though - the first few years might be a little rough but i'm hoping that having our bedroom seperate will give us more privacy as a couple and keep our bedroom feeling like our own space...also this is weird but i know that i would feel more uncomfortable having sex with my kids in the next room than i am about having them sleep on a seperate floor (at least when they are older) - i want to maintain a sex life after kids and i know myself and i would worry about them hearing or knowing, especially if they are in the room next door..

what really made me feel okay about buying our house with the seperate bedrooms was that my parents hardly slept in their bedroom when my sister and i were growing up. dad slept on the first level on a couch, mom slept on the second level on the living room couch (they have been sleeping seperately for years due to both of them being loud snorers!) that left my sister and i alone upstairs on the third floor. we did it and we were fine. we never fell down the stairs and got hurt and my mom or dad was always there if we woke up crying or if we needed them.

i do have another bedroom that we use as an office downstairs on the main floor. we decided not to make that the nursery. we plan on hopefully having more than 1 child in the future and we would like to keep their bedrooms together. that bedroom is also on the first floor near the front door and garage and i would be nervous about them easily getting out -(sneaking out) but by that time we probably won't even live here anymore Chat Icon

i think i would be more uncomfortable with the kids downstairs and us upstairs. either way if the kids want you they still may try to use the stairs (which is the only thing that worries me, them falling) but i would worry about them sneaking out if they were older (my sister has a ground floor bedroom and has snuck out of her window and has had people sneak in her window!!) also i am paranoid and i would worry about some creep trying to look in their window if they were on the ground floor - like a peeping tom!

short answer - yes i am comfortable not being on the same floor as my future children - or at least i better be b/c that is how it's going to be for us!

We have a cape. Our bedroom is on the first floor and DD sleeps upstairs and so will our new LO. We put DD up there at 3 1/2 months with a Summer video monitor and it has not been a problem.

I dont see anything wrong with putting the kids upstairs. I would have an issue with them being downstairs and me being upstairs though.

I have no issue with it. I would keep a baby on the same floor more for convenience though.
I grew up in a cape and was on the lower level by myself from about 3 or 4 on. The other bedrooms were up stairs.

I grew up in a Levitt house. We moved there when I was 4 and my sister was 3. Our room was initially on the first floor next to my parents' room. My brother was born 3 months after we moved in. I know we stayed in that room for a few months after he was born and then we moved upstairs when I was 5 and my sister was 4. I remember when I was younger if I had a bad dream - I would just go downstairs and tell my mom or dad - it never seemed to be a big deal.

In our house (a dormered ranch), we have 3 bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms (which we use as a den and office) downstairs. If we have more than 2 kids, we might have to use the downstairs rooms, but it is what it is.

My 9 1/2 year old would NEVER sleep on a different level than us. Not because of me, because of her. She still won't even go downstairs to watch TV aloneChat Icon

I would say 5. They need to be comfortable with not only stairs but also using the potty independently (that is, if there is one upstairs).
