Would you go to the ER if...

you are coughing uncontrollably for about 3 weeks and the medicine the dr gave you isn't working-for bronchitis. And the doctor can't see you until tomorrow. But the coughing is literally OUT OF CONTROL.

Trip to the ER would be to make sure I don't have pneumonia-I'm going away tomorrow night

It try a walk in clinic before the ER.
You'll most likely wait in the ER for hours.

Also agreed. If you're in Nassau, Dr. Peck in Baldwin takes walk-ins and can also do a chest x-ray if you need it.

No. I would go to a walk in clinic. I do anything to avoid that $500 co-pay for the ER.
ex.
I had chest pains & numbness down my arm & called every cardiologist to try to get an appointment.

agreed. you might still have a wait at a clinic but not as long as the ER since you would be low on the "priority" list

Definetly do something more aggressive if your doc isn't helping you out.

Once I had a coughing fit so bad that I created a hole in my lung. I had no idea until my doctor called me up in a panic the next day saying he saw my chest xray and to goto the ER since my lung could collapse.

I was sore for a very long time and even now a year later when I cough I feel that it's just not right.

Feel better.

Sorry. Laugh at this (but only if it doesnt make you cough.)
Doctor tells me to goto ER RIGHT AWAY and I say "Ok, what do I tell them" He said that he will call them to let them know I'm coming, and that if they ask what the problem is that you have 'air in your lungs'.

Think of how they looked at me when I went to the desk and said "Doctor told me to come here urgently, I have air in my lungs" Chat Icon I was probably quite the conversation that day of some idiot lady who thinks she shouldn't have air in her lungs. When I clarified saying "Doctor looked at chest xray and he said there is air in my lungs where there shouldn't be" - they took me a bit more seriously.

I go to the dr at 10 tomorrow. I got it pushed up from 430. Lets hope I sleep tonight. I've been up since 230 am coughing. I had an attack so bad before I almost had to call someoen to come pick me up.

I've just called Huntington Hospital. They don't have a 24 hour clinic outside of the ER. I know this doesn't help you now but for future reference:

Re: Would you go to the ER if...

I hope the Dr. can help you tomorrow.

Just a thought, I was misdiagnosed 3 times, first just a cold, then bronchitis, then possible pneumonia. Turns out I had Whooping Cough - I had horrendous coughing attacks. They put me on some steroids, cough syrup with codeine, an inhaler and pretty strong antibiotics. I was out of work for a month!

Do you think it could be whooping cough?

google and webmd are the WORST but I find myself there alot.

I had bronchitis and left it untreated the 1st time for 3+ weeks (I didn't think it was more than a stubborn cough) but I was a mess and getting worse, not better. I went to the doc and eventually felt better. Then last year I came down with it just as I left for upstate during Christmas, I didn't go to the doc (this time the clinic) till the day after New Years Day. Both time the cough lingered for weeks but did improved very quickly witht he ZPac antibiotic

Feel better!! Chat Icon
