EI Moms-WWYD?
So Nina has been in speech now for almost 7 weeks. She loves her SLP and has really improved so much, BUT the SLP never ever stays the 45 minutes she is supposed to. She comes about 10-15 minutes late, every session and always leaves the regular, scheduled time. What would you do? Would you just let it slide since your DC is improving anyway and you really do like the SLP? I am not good with having to confront people on things like this.

You need to say somethinh, she is entitled 45 minutes. How about aaying "does this time not work out for you" or something to that effect to open up the conversation

YES she is improving but think about how much more she would improve if the provider put in the required time!
That is freaking BS! I would say something!!!!!!

I agree-she is short changing your daughter and if she is doing this well with only 2/3 of her time, imagine how well she would do with the whole time! Good luck!

Yea I would open up by saying "Should we make the session a little later?" or something along those lines just to get the conversation going.

If she's 10-15 minutes late, she should be making the time up at the end. 45 minutes is a long time for them at that age, but if my DS was getting tired, the therapists switch gears and try something else for the last 10 minutes, or at spend that time talking to me about his progress, suggestions of things to try, etc.

UGH, Im so terrible at this, but its really annoying me, I just don't want to get her mad and then make it uncomfortable when she comes. Ok, Wednesday it is! Ill say something.

I would say something. However some of the therapist are a little touchy with it. My mom asked one time oh your done already & was told the session can last up to 45 min but is only required for half an hour. Good luck.

I think you should talk to your therapist and express your concerns. However, as a pediatric occupational therapist for EI, sessions can last up to 45 minutes but no less than 30 minutes. Is your child able to attend for an entire 45 minutes? Is she using a portion of his session time (ex- 30 min with your child and 10 min with you) discussing the goals and outcome of the session and how you can carryover to the following week? just a thought. I do not always spend the full 45 minutes with each of my children depending on other factors.

No, she will say she is doing really well and this and that is improving, as she is walking towards the door. My DD is really good for her and really interested in the SLP. She has no problems participating her for longer. Im going to give it one more session and she how long it lasts.

If your daughter can tolerate the 45 minutes and is engaged and interested then she should be getting the 45 minutes! When I treat a child that can attend for the extended period of tme, I treat for 40 minutes and leave 5 minutes to either talk to the parent for carryover/details what we did in the session or fill in my daily log note so that equals 45 minutes. Is she filling in the log note when she is at your house? I would time her next session and if you feel like it is too short then I would ask her 1-what she thought of extending the session to the full 45 minutes since your DD is tolerating the amount of time she is currently doing with progress so you feel its time to push her a little more and 2- ask her question number one and also say you would like her once a month to take the last 15 minutes of the session to sit with you to discuss DD progress, goals and carryover.
As far as being 10-15 minutes late occasionally we are late because of traffic or a previous session ran long so I always ask my parents to be understanding. However if it is every session that is rude. make sure she is not short changing your DD t get to the next session on time with a mom that may not be as nice/tolerant as you!

No, she doesn't fill out the notes when she is there. She comes by once every two weeks for us to sign all of them. I thought that was weird but I wasn't sure if that is the norm.
I know she has little kids so I do not mind if she needs a little slack here and there, I really am very laid back. But it's every single time.

I know she has little kids so I do not mind if she needs a little slack here and there, I really am very laid back. But it's every single time.
They tell the parents not to fill in blank log notes but I know I would rather spend the time treating the child or speaking with the parents so I discuss this with each of my parents and see what they are comfortable with me/them doing with regards to the log notes so that is completely up to you.
But like I said before, I would talk to her and rather than say "hey why aren't you doing X,Y and Z" I would state it like. "DD is doing wonderful but I know the sessions are 30-45 minutes, maybe it is time to push her a little more by extending the session time to the full 45 minutes since she can attend and is making progress" - this way she knows you are aware that she hasnt been staying the entire time and so that she knows you want her to push DD to make the most progress possible during all of her sessions.
