Has anyone had major dental work in the 1st trimester?
I'm in the middle of having some major dental work, but now I think I might be pregnant. It's just a bit too early to test - what do I do??
1. go on with the work - with just novacaine and no post pain meds (over the last year I've been getting NO2 and percocets)
2. postpone until second trimester (which would not be good with my work schedule) - they are on vacation for 2 weeks after my procedure, so it's not like I could wait to test
3. at 3 weeks gestation (which is really 1 week after conception) is the zygote not even attached and any drugs wouldn't affect it?

Not sure but I had a gum infection in January, and they gave me some serious antibiotics during my 2ww. When I asked my OB he told me to throw them away.

I had a root canal & cap done. It was fine. You cannot have Novocain, they use something synthetic that works almost as well. You get doubled covered for x-rays.
I was 14 weeks when I had it done, so actually it was my 2nd tri. Still it was fine. I wouldn't wait.

It depends. Can the work wait?I am in the middle of never ending major dental work LOL but it is on hold for now. I would say if you aren't in pain and aren't in the middle of a procedure, then it is safer to wait unless an emergency pops up.

My OB told me not to go until the 2nd trimester. I had a ton of work that I had to put on hold. If it can wait, I would. If not, just let them know that you think you might be pregnant, they'll adjust to what you need.

I would call your obgyn and ask them for their professional opinion.

Re: Has anyone had major dental work in the 1st trimester?
I had a scheduled procedure and then got the Big fat+ for my first pregnancy. I talked to the Oral Surgeon and my reg dentist and we agreed to wait to the second trimester to proceed and then I went through with it with only novicane - (I was supposed to be knocked out) and only OB approved pain killers afterword. It went fine and DD is happy and healthy.
One tip is to bring your Ipod with you and turn the music up while they are working - it really helped me relax.

Re: Has anyone had major dental work in the 1st trimester?
I found out i was Pregnant in Mid-January. I hadnt been to the dentist in a little over five months so i was due for a check up. When i went in, the dentist found a cavity that needed to be taken care of.
I did some research and spoke to my doctors and they said it is safe to have dental work done in the first and third trimesters. (at the time i had the work done i was about 9 weeks) As for novicane?... im not sure what my dentist used, but im pretty sure it was something else (ive had novicane before and this tasted different)
Also, make sure you tell your dentist you may be pregnant, as they will take other measures to ensure they dont use anything that could harm the baby.
Best of Luck :)

Re: Has anyone had major dental work in the 1st trimester?
thanks everyone. I decided to call the dentist, so he could get alternatives ready, but he said no non-emergency dental work in the 1st or 2nd trimester, so I will wait a few more days to find out definitely and then reschedule.
