Trick or Treating alone

This was brought up between DS and his friend today, about how they want to go Trick or Treating on their own this year. They are in 5th grade.

When did you/will you allow DC to go on their own?

Re: Trick or Treating alone

Never.

Seriously.. I don't know. Robbie is in 4th grade this year and I know there is NO WAY in heck he's going alone. He's got to show a massive growth in emotional maturity and responsibility before I would even consider it.

And honestly.. even if/when I do allow it.. I will be THAT mom who says he can go.. and then follows him as inconspicuously as possible. Expect a headline on 11/1/2012: Crazy Mom in Hobo Costume Caught Skulking Behind Bushes!

Re: Trick or Treating alone

My DS is in 3rd grade this year and there is no way he is going alone. Not for a long time. Maybe I will consider it when he is a senior in HS.Chat Icon

Honestly I just don't know when I would let him go alone and I would do the same as the poster above and follow behind.

I dont' have a specific age, but I'd consider it in middle school.

I did go in 6th grade in a huge group.

Never. I am serious.

IMO, trick or treating is dangerous. Letting children go unsupervised to strangers homes asking for candy... nope.

Once my children hit middle school, I plan to hold halloween parties for them and their friends at our home. They already know that trick or treating is for YOUNG children, and that once they decide they are too old for a chaperone, that means no more TOT-ing.

5th grade is too young in this day and age

We are doing a modified plan that seems to OK for all of us.

My girls will be going with a group of friends. We will have a specific route that we will be taking. Along the route there are a couple of meet up spots....

Myself and some other parents will be walking with the younger kids. The older kids can go off on their own but they have to stick to the route and they have to wait for us at the meeting spots...

Essentially, the way we have it worked out, we are all always on the same block just at different ends...

My girls are going into 6th grade.

This sounds like a perfect solution!

DS is going into 6th grade, we considered it briefly but in the end decided that this won't be the year.

I don't know when, if ever.

I like this idea a lot. I have to remember it.
