At what age did you have "the talk"?

DD#1 is 9 and is clueless(as far as I can tell). We have never spoke about her getting her period and I am getting nervous. She shows ZERO signs of getting it soon but I know some of her friends are. She is 9 1/2 and my friends daughter got it at that exact ageChat Icon I feel like I should be doing it soon but I am dreading it.

Jade was 9 when we had the period talk. I was in the shower and she had to go to the bathroom , so I made small talk lol and threw it out there ! I asked her if she knew what it was, but she didn't so I explained that at a certain age ( around hers) you start getting what we call a period. You end up bleeding down there every month b/c certain things are going on iin the body to prepare for when you are MUCH older ,you can have babies. She kept saying "uh huh !" I also tried to joke with her , and tell her " yeah it sukks and we all hate it ,but it's something that happens to all of us ... oh your poor daddy with all these woman in the house and all of us will one day have our periods...hahaha" she was laughing also Chat Icon

I tried to throw it out there every once in awhile , so it wouldn't be one of those uncomfortable sit downs. I would say to her " don't forget that if you start bleeding down there , it's ok ! Just let me know and I can get you one of those fantastic pads hahaha Chat Icon "

When she did get it ( a month ago) she woke me up excited ,and was like "momma I'm bleeding down there" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just tried to make it a "comfortable" talk .Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

at 9 we did have "the talk" , while i was dreading it we had to have it because kids in her school were talking about it.

We had the period and sex talk all rolled up in one, since the girl in her class who told everyone that she had her period also told everyone that it's ok now for her to have sex and have a babyChat Icon

so needless, to say i had to set my DD straight on the facts and it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be.

what do you say when you have the sex talk? Do you go into details or sugar coat it like " when a man and woman love eachother they make love , and when they make love they make babies?" I don't even know what to say Chat Icon

My DS is almost 10, and we have been having brief conversations about puberty related stuff for about a year and a half. Knowledge is power, right?

If her friends are getting it, you should definitely have the talk with her, otherwise she will end up getting all kinds of twisted information from school Chat Icon

My girls knew from a very early age where babies came from. They didnt necessarily know that if you insert A into B you get C but they had a general idea....

They got the whole kit and kaboodle when they were 8 years old. Now at 11 we have moved on to the more interesting topics....Chat Icon

My rational is this...you need to have "the talk" with them before they are too embarrassed to talk to you. By 12 or 13 it's too late....
