Looking for programs on self-defense and stranger danger
I don't post too often but need some help... My daughter is PDD-NOS and was sexually assaulted last week after school on the playground (under a sitter's watch-who has now been fired). Her communication skills are very poor however she knows that no one is permitted to touch her "down there". I think this came as a surprise to her-the attack and she wasn't really able to tell the person no. My question is-does anyone know of a good program, for special needs children that can teach self-defense skills and stranger danger? We're on the south shore in Suffolk. Any recs would be GREATLY appreciate!!

Re: Looking for programs on self-defense and stranger danger
I am so sorry this happened. My heart goes out to you!
My son also had PDD-NOS and today we had family training. We talked about getting him to say NO or Leave Me Alone. We're gonna try to incorporate that into his program. NOTHING happened like what happened to your poor DD. My son was bit and didn't know how to react
This is a GREAT question. If anyone knows of anything, please post!

OMG! How horrible! I am so sorry!
This is my fear too even if I have a little boy. That someone else will take advantage of him physically and he does not speak and does not understand why would someone hurt him.
I don't know of any programs. Do you have family training with your services? Like Dawn said, that's how I would go about this.
Have you contacted the school? Do they have support groups, family training, etc...
My heart goes to you.

I'm so sorry. I enrolled my son in karate through his preschool.
They can start karate at 3, in most places, if an adult goes with them.

Re: Looking for programs on self-defense and stranger danger
you can look for social skills classes that address those issues....depending on her age and where you are located
you can try calling the sid jacobsen jcc in rosyln, mid-island y jcc in plainview or suffolk y jcc in commack as they all have social skills programs for children with special needs. also you can try kid esteem-they run programs as well. maybe the cody center in stonybrook might have more resources too. i am going to ask a few colleagues of mine when i get back to work on monday as well.

Re: Looking for programs on self-defense and stranger danger
Thanks everyone-it's been a long week. I might be checking out some places nearby-Cody Center (although not close) is a good one that I didn't think of. We have our first SEPTA meeting this coming Monday and I might ask there as well. I'll let you know if I dig anything good up!
