Dogs with allergies to odd things?

what is dog allergic too?

my dog gets red skin. we have tried changing his food a few times and cutting out all grain, corn, etc. but it doesn't seem to be working. the vet wants us to start allergy testing him. its several rounds at 1k each test

trying everything I can environmental first.

he was brought to the shelter because his family couldn't take care of his allergies.

Do you have a dog that has allergies? if so how did you treat them or go about helping them?

my dog has serious food allergies. We didn't have the testing done but this is what happened.

He was on Hill's IVD Allergen free (which has chicken in it) many dogs are allergic to chicken, and it is also used in alot of the puppy formula's. So we switched him to fish.

Rexy gets nothing else except Orijen fish formula food. No treats, no scraps, no nothing He only gets his kibble so far he has been fine.

If it's outside allergens im wondering if your vet can describe an antihistamine?

i noticed a reaction of my dog from things washed in regular detergent - so now we use free & clear type detergents when washing his bed and stuff

Also my dog has severe food allergies - we switched him to Natural Balance - they have several kinds of LID (limited ingredient diets) like potato & duck, lamb & rice etc

It took about 1-2 months on the food before the symptoms went away

What worked for us was the fish-based food, no grains, no white meat, and scrutinizing everything we gave him including treats.

We also give vitamin E and fish oil pills, to help the skin and coat. We used to wipe him down after he was outside laying in grass but we don't have to do that anymore so I don't think it was an environmental allergy.

Ditto on the laundry detergent, and anything you put down on your carpeting or clean your floors with.

thanks for all the suggestions ladies. I have him on a food that's no grain, no beef, no corn etc but it could be the chicken! I even bought that brands treats and he gets nothing else. He's still a puppy so I'm afraid to switch him to an adult food yet but if it will help with his skin, I think the benefits out weight the risk

I've been using green cleaners so hopefully they aren't bothering him

He gets benadryl everyday to help in case it was seasonal but it doesn't seem to help much that's why we were thinking it was food based

He may also be allergic to flea bites?? My Shih Tzu is. Although he is on Frontline, it doesnt prevent a flea from biting him. When this happens I usually have to take him in to the vet for a shot bc he has such a bad reaction.

I tried switching him to K9 Advantix which prevents felas from biting but, I'm not too crazy about the reported side affects and stopped it.

Seasonal allergies, food allergies, detergents.....took us years and years to find a good food and figure out a routine that works for her Make sure your food is loaded with Omega 3 oils--they help soo much!! I bath her every 3 weeks in special shampoo to help as well.

Seasonal allergies, food allergies, detergents.....took us years and years to find a good food and figure out a routine that works for her Make sure your food is loaded with Omega 3 oils--they help soo much!! I bath her every 3 weeks in special shampoo to help as well.

My dog is allergic to cats, ants, wool, and grass. We had to go through allergy testing at an animal dermatologist to find that out, since she was out of control itchy, and changing her food wasn't helping.

Of those 4 major allergens, the grass is the one that is really beyond our control. Even if we were to pave our yard, it's still all around in the neighbors yards and we still take her for walks where she gets to go in the grass...

She now gets oral meds once daily and injectible meds once weekly, with quarterly trips back to the dermatologist for evaluations and bloodwork, and her symptoms have improved, but aren't 100% better. I'd say her allergies are "manageable" now. We're spending a small fortune on this dog, but I feel like we really have no other choice... when she's unmedicated, she'll scratch and bite until she cuts herself, and she's so uncomfortable that she can't even sleep

what kind of food works for you?

We were using Eukanuba Sensitive Skin with much success but the formula was recalled a little over a month ago. Now she is on Blue Buffalo and doing well. Their formulas are just as fresh and natural as you can get in a dog food.
